Maybe some kind of browser "wrapping" problem?
I have asked about this before, but going to try again. The DU homepage is too wide for my monitor - the entire right hand column is out of view. On the forum pages I get a slider at the bottom but the only content that is actually out of view is a little bit of the new google search box on the upper right of the page.

I have tried changing the resolution, but all it does is make everything small and still too wide for the screen.

No other sites I visit do this and I have been ignoring it here for months. Well, a couple of days ago Crooks and Liars started doing it. It is "worse" than here because it is almost cut in half. Have to use the slider bar to read everything. (or copy and paste into a document - real PITA!) I e-mailed them and they said it might be a "wrapping problem" with my browser. I use Firefox and double checked IE - it is happening there too, so it must be something else? I tried to google "browser wrapping" and variations on that and all I get is advice for folks creating websites, not for viewers (with one rec to adjust resolution settings).

Any ideas?

1. Which version of Firefox are you using?
Making sure you have the latest version is the first place to start, IMHO. Older versions often get funky results when displaying pages.

Let's start there ...

2. I'm using Iceweasel on Debian Linux...
and my screen (text) wraps properly when I blow up the pages. On a friend's PC with XP and IE, I have to read everything at native resolution or scroll side to side (which makes me nuts). I haven't figured out how to fix the issue within IE (though I have also tried changing the resolution), but don't spend enough time on that PC to bother with it and, besides, it's not something I have to live with.

Some sites seem to scale properly (ctl+) automatically on the XP machine, but DU isn't one of them.

I'll be interested to see if anyone comes to (y)our rescue on this issue.

3. A seond question .. Screen resolution
Sorry to split into two posts, but I didn't want you to be answering the first question and miss this one ...

What resolution are you currently set to?

Which have you tried?

When I see this problem at work, people usually have their resolution set to 640x480 or 800x600.

To display properly across nearly all pages, you should set your resolution to 1024X768. If that makes your text too small to read, you can adjust the font size in Firefox by going to View-->Text Size-->Increase or pressing CTRL + + (that is, CTRL key and the + at the same time.)

4. Ok this is really wierd
I was at 800x600 and changed it to 1024x786, restarted and looked at both C & L and DU in BOTH IE and Firefox. The fonts got all small but the wideness problem was still happening. I SWEAR!

So I put it back to 800x600 just because that is what I had been used to for icons on desktop etc. So I started to answer your post and thought ok lets just check it again. So put it to 1024x786 and now it is working for both sites correctly. even when I enlarge the font, the page stays the correct width and ther is no slider bar at the bottom.

I am not insane, it did NOT work when I tried it before. But it is now, so thanks. I think. :o

5. Well, changing the screen resolution can sometimes be tricker than it first appears
First, it sometimes does a 'do you want to keep these settings' prompt after doing a short trial of the new resolution. The prompt is so if it doesn't work with you hardware, it will revert back to your previous settings and everything is ok. A mis-click can mean you thought you changed it but you didn't.

Second, sometimes you need to restart.

Third, I have magic powers. :)

In all seriousness, if it's working, it's working--that's all that matters. Oh, and I didn't have to walk all the way to the other end of the building after dropping everything else I was working on to help you out. :D

6. The trick wioth screen resolution...
is to pick the right ratio for your screen. 3:4 for regular 16:9 for wide screen.

Use the buttons on your monitor to adjust the view to fit properly on the screen.
