Are there any websites dedicated to free offsite backup? |
|
I know there are sites that offer free disk space, but are there any websites that also provide integrated applications that will back up a small amount of data on a client's machine for free? If not, I think that idea could make someone rich (via ads and upgrade-ability).
I just have a few files, definitely less that 100mb that I would like to backup to an offsite location. I would think a free service would exist by now.

1. Okay, I found idrive.com |
|
Maybe that will do it. Let me know if you have any opinions though. Thanks.

2. Why not burn them to a CD and store it/them off site. |

Trusted friends, relatives, even a safety deposit box. They would be safer, more secure and definitely more private.

5. I'll do that too, thanks |
|
Ideally, I should use iDrive for nightly backups, and every couple weeks also drag and drop all the files to a DVD.
I'm only somewhat concerned about privacy. I mean, I believe iDrive when they say the files are encrpyted. Plus I really don't think their staff is in the business of stealing people's data. And even if (a huge if) someone were to steal my files, I'm pretty sure they would have no idea what to do with a bunch of cryptic code and schematics. Heck I can barely maintain the mental capacity to work with them myself.
Thanks, though, I'll definitely use CD/DVDs too.

3. Have you looked in to what your ISP offers? |
|
I don't use it, but I'm pretty sure my ISP (Brighthouse) offers free storage space. And IIRC it is more than what you are looking for. Others may do the same. Some also offer free security software too, BTW.

4. Thanks, so far iDrive seems cool |
|
iDrive's software is specifically for scheduling routine backups so it's working out so far. I wouldn't rely on my ISP. If I forget to pay a bill then all my backups are gone. Of course iDrive might go out of business too, so I'll be looking for a second backup location sometime.
But anyway I got 12 gigs of offsite backup now for free, and they suppposedly encrypt the files or let you use your own encryption.
So I think I asked too quickly. But thanks for the recommendation.
