I have a new monitor, and the characters in "Morrowind" are now fat..
...that is, they are all stretched out.

I've tried downloading and running stuff like the FPS, the graphics extender, and the resolution tweaker, but I have an ominous feeling that they were all written pre-Vista because they will not load or run properly on my Vista 64-bit system.

Anyone got any ideas on what to do to get the aspect ratio back to where it should be? I can live with fat characters and funny-looking buildings but it would be nice to lose the distortion.

The monitor is a 1920 x 1080, 50-60 Hz Dell, with Morrowing GOTY edition running on the above noted Vista OS.

hopefully,
Bright

1. Do you have a button
on your monitor, or a setting that lets you change to 4:3 ratio?

3. No, the "Display Settings" menu on the monitor doesn't include aspect ratio.

Just horizontal and vertical position, sharpness, pixel clock, and phase.

And the control panel adjustments include 1920 x 1080 (which I enabled,) but no aspect ratio adjustment.

Thanks for the suggestion, though!

gratefully,
Bright

7. This might work
I have used this in the past, it may be what you are looking for.

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/Res-O-Matic.shtml

Res-O-Matic is a small, no install program that allows you to nominate the resolution at which you wish to run various programs. You configure the program .exe file and link it to a preferred resolution. It then creates a shortcut for that configuration. If you ran Morrowind at say 1280x1024 it might slim down the fat characters.

I've never tried Morrowind, is it an oldish game? I play Thief 2 (2001) constantly and have the same problem with fat taffers. Luckily the 3:4 button on my monitor is a quick fix.

2. Did you install the driver for your monitor?
I know Windows generic monitor driver should work but I usually install the driver for the OS and monitor. Make sure the monitor is set to run at it's native resolution. What monitor do you have?

4. Well, I ran the DVD that came with it.
But all it seemed to have on it was links to the online documentation files.

When I tried to update the drivers, Vista told me it already has the "optimal driver for my equipment."

Sigh.

I guess I'll have to get used to fat Vvardenfellows.

Thanks so much for the suggestions!

appreciatively,
Bright

5. I play Morrowind!
Elder Scrolls

Check to see if Bethesda has an update or patch and/or poke around their forum.

6. If you have an nVidia chipset/card
you might want to check if you're using a VGA connection instead of DVI. Apparently, the driver's control panel options will change accordingly. Also, there are some issues with monitor detection in recent driver releases:

Here's a guy whose aspect troubles were fixed by switching cables:
