Something Weird - FireFox

Some time ago, I went on and on about possible problems with a FireFox setting called pipelining that, for some users, increases web browsing performance. For some on high speed connections, this can cause problems for various reasons I won't repeat. Obviously, I was one of the people who experienced these problems.

For no particular reason, I decided to try pipelining under my Linux installation just now. Guess what. No problem. With my current Internet service, I've never considered my browsing experience slow by any measure, but damn. This pipelining thing just makes the pages pop, pop, pop. I even tested it using the StopWatch website, and the improvement in performance, while basically negligible in terms of time on small pages (< 1 second load time), is definitely there with regularity. I tested using a page with a large number of graphic files, and the improvement was on the order of an increased download of the entire page by 2 - 5 seconds over the default settings.

But this all has left me confused. My understanding is that the problem I was experiencing is caused by my the speed of my connection, which I don't doubt is at least somewhat true because I did experience a couple small glitches. However, it appears that Windoze itself, or some aspect of it, is partly to blame and actually the biggest part of my own problem. I'd tried this on different computers with Windoze, so it wasn't specifically my computer.

Anyway, I just thought I'd mention it. I understand better now what those of you who have used pipelining were talking about.
