I got an attached file by email which I need to open. The trouble is my computer can't open it. It is a Corel Word Perfect document with a .wpd extension. Does anybody know of any free software I can download in order to open this file in?
Thanks!

what does that mean? It has a virus? You should call the FBI - I'm not kidding - spreading viruses is against the law...

I clicked for information and it said "low threat, no viruses" but also recommended that I not download a program with an unknown publisher. As I am a relative novice at computers, I decided not to do something I didn't know all the consequences of.
Thanks for the link anyway. I will bookmark it and try to learn more about it.

...perhaps that should be the first thing you should find out - what that message really means, and what it doesn't mean...
PS: there's a world outside of Microsoft.

the message is in English, isn't it? Why isn't it more clear as to what it means and what it doesn't mean?
As to a world outside Microsoft, P.S. No kidding - I spent the entire decade of the 80s and most of the 90s vigorously rejecting the encroachment of computer technology into my life. I was born in a time in which I had NO computers growing up and there were NO computers in any school of mine all through college. I can certainly imagine a world without Microsoft, or without any of it for that matter.
Oh - I did finally get the file open. It was easy, but I called Gateway's "how to" line. I merely saved the file to My Documents, then right clicked on it, chose "open with", then chose "Microsoft Word", then Word opened and directed me to put my CD into the drive, so I did and then Word apparently did the conversion (as mentioned by poster below) and the file was opened. Whew! So much for that - next time I'll know.

if it has the conversion tables installed. But it does a shitty job of it. One of the reasons I use WordPerfect. I can open practically any format in WP-edit and save back to original or WPD without any problems.

I found "Word Perfect" on the Help menu, but whatever it was they offer vis a vis Word Perfect I need to download it. So will do that later today and see if I get a way to convert out of it.
Thank you both very much for your help with this.

9. I open .wpd files with Word all the time |
|
. . .
sometimes the spacing/formatting is off a bit, but the text is all there.
If you've downloaded the file, initiate Word and it should convert automatically - I have Word 2000, and it works fine.
On an after thought - I just tried something -
locate the file, save it as another name if you wish
What I did, was just change the extension from .wpd to .doc (right click and "rename" in an explore window, some programs will let you even rename in an "open" window, again - use the right click to get the pop-up menu for that)
Word opened it up without even a hiccup!
Never tried it before -
but I picked an old document I didn't need and like I said - it worked.
Even if it had not of worked, I could have changed the extension back to .wpd anyhoo
Thanks to your inquiry I learned something!!
