Best quality pet foods?
I choose cat foods with only human grade ingredients and no meat "meals" or corn fillers. My favorite brands (most come in canine too) are Artemis ("kitty cocaine" www.artemiscompany.com ), Spot's Stew ( www.halopets.com) , Wellness, Innova, Solid Gold, Organix (treats only-the guys don't like the kibble) and Merrick.

Your favorites?

1. I've used Petguard for about 5 years....
and my four guys really like it. It is not sold in any pet store that I've seen. I get it from my local health food store and a case of 12 14 oz cans runs around $22.00. Pricey, but it has decent human grade ingredients and omega-3 fatty acids.

2. Thanks for the Artemis link. We've been feeding
Nutro to our cats (8 or 9 strays), as it was the only reasonably priced cat food w/out any by-products or "digest." We hate to be cheap, so to speak, but this is a rescue org, and we can't really spend a ton on gourmet food. Artemis has a great ingredients list, and a fair price.

Our dogs are all vegetarian. We get either Wow-Bow or Nature's Recipe for them.

7. Here's a local distributor in your area:
Dog Lovers
14330 Dale Mabry Hwy
Tampa, FL 33618
(813) 962-8646
(813) 962-8308 Fax
www.dogloversonline.com

My distributor in Winter park is even cheaper than ordering it through the company's site!

4. I was using Iams till the Sinclair boycott.
So I've switched to Purina One. With four dogs, we go through a lot and I just can't make an extra trip to the pet store so I have to buy what I can get at the grocery store.

5. I don't know what cities you are close to
but some distributors will deliver for free. Here's one in Texas for Artemis:
Platinum Pet
P.O Box 2842
Coppell, TX 75019
(214) 636-7160
(972) 899-2281

In my area of Central Florida, Pookie's Bow Wow Bakery delivers human grade brands for free. Check your local yellow pages; some vet centers will do the same.

8. I'm outside of Austin.
I don't see a retail store listed in the Austin area but thanks for the link to check it out.

I've tried ordering dogfood online before but because it's so heavy and we need so much, the shipping costs are just too high. :(

6. it's weird, but...
I have a 15 year old Lhasa Apso, and I've fed him Mighty Dog since I got him 12 years ago. Either it's good stuff or he has exceptional genes, but he's as active and healthy as a puppy. I've been giving him a dose of glucosomine every day for the last six years, so maybe that's the key. Anyway, he likes it (then again, he likes ALL food, the little mooch).

9. We give our little lab mix glucosomine every day, too.
She had a torn ACL and even after surgery, gets a little stiff and gimpy. The glucosomine really seems to help.

11. yep
If you start the pet on glucosomine at mid-life, it really seems to improve their joint health later on. Hartz-Mountain makes a lamb flavored glucosomine that also has vitamins and other joint healthy ingredients, and he eats it like a snack (and kudos to them for making a pill that he actually eats). I can't believe how active my 15 year old is, and I think the key to it has been his glucosomine regiment.

12. I have a Neapolitan Mastiff...
with mild hip problems and have been feeding him glucosamine. It's really done wonders for him. Now I'm going to try on a 30 yr. old arthritic mare with a bad knee. We'll see...

13. My guys like Nutro/Max Cat....
and Waltham's (who also make Pedigree and Whiskas). Those are the three brands that don't upset the gastric tract of the one and the taste buds of the other. They're only found in pet stores - though I have found Max Cat at the Navy Exchange.

16. ONE Hairball Formula
Does a good job, too. They like it, they're thriving, and they don't hock up hairballs any more. That fur all goes out the other end now.
