Question about house training |
|
My Boston has been doing really well in house training. Not to many accidents and i heap praise upon praise when he does his business in the right place. Now he is trying to fool me. When he goes out the first thing is he pees. Then he hunts around for his number 2 spot and normally does it. When he does i give him praise and a little snack. Well now he is "pretending" to do a number 2! He squats and sits for a second or two then starts jumping for the treat. What can i do to still give positive praise but not praise him for "pretending"? Thanks in advance. This is not my first dog but the first time living in the city with a inside dog. So i need as much training as he does. :)

1. They are smarter than us, aren't they? |

:-) Seriously, though, lose the treats as a reward. I would stick with just verbal praise and start immediately. Just say whatever words you do to encourage him to do number 2 and don't praise him until he does.
Good luck, puppies are fun!

2. Don't give him a treat, or praise him unless he really goes |
|
You are not really training him to poop outside if you get him a treat for squatting, you are training him that if he squats he gets a treat. He should have to poop about 15-20 minutes after he eats, so try to time it and get him outside at that point. Good Luck!

3. I have a six year old pointer who "fakes" it |
|
In the morning the most important thing on her mind is eating. I'll let her out of her crate and she immediately runs for the room where we feed her. I have to tell her that she has to go out first so she does, but sometimes she just runs down the steps and runs right back up them. She's old enough to hold it so I don't push the issue but anyone who tells me dogs don't have the ability to reason are out of their minds.
I agree with everyone else. Lose the treats, at least outside, and walk your pup until he does his business. Once he's done then you can praise him and take him back in the house. Then you can use the treats he was getting for pottying to train him to sit, down, stay, etc. You know he's treat oriented so use that to your advantage. He gets a treat and you get a well behaved dog.
