Post Your Pet's Picture Thread! (Again, since I finally have chi pics)
Edited on Fri Mar-04-05 04:46 PM by Worst Username Ever
Sophie the Wonder Chihuahua. She was a rescue, and I think she might not be pure chihuahua (she does not have the scrunched up nose and is a little big, about 8 pounds, instead of the AKC standard of 6 pounds or less. But she sure looks and acts like a chihuahua).

Post yours!

2. Thank you, she is a cutie.
Definetely more my fiancee's dog than mine, but she needed a home and we had one. VERY timid, peed a lot at first, but she is getting better!

4. Molly
We adopted Molly (Wheaten/Schnauzer mix) after she'd been neglected for about 9mo, beginning when she was quite young. Her original adopter was an older woman who became ill and was bed-ridden until she died, when Molly was returned to her original home (not a breeder, just a friend of my BF's cousin) until we took her.

We suspect Molly was abused by the sick lady's adult sons while being penned in a kitchen with no socialization; luckily the worst fallout from her early experiences are lack of lick inhibition and a mistrust of some strangers. Otherwise, she's quite gregarious and trainable (clicker training is a miracle!).

Next weekend we'll have had her for 1yr (she's about 2.5yrs old now)!

WAY more pics than you'll want to see at http://mollydog.textamerica.com :)

10. Interesting....
I have a question you may be able to answer. Rumor has it that Sophie was abused by the first owner, and now she is VERY submissive. She will pee easily, is prone to cowering in corners, and does not like adult men. Girls she likes just fine, and I believe she is convinced that my fiancee is the Goddess Who Reigns Over All Canines.

My question: Please define Lick Inhibition. Is this linked to abuse? The reason I ask is becacause Sophie licks EVERYTHING. The floor, the couch, the walls... she'll be in bed while we are reading, and then when we go to kennel her there will be a big wet spot on the sheets. Not pee, but a big spot from her LICKING. She also insists on licking me or Fiancee's hand constantly. Is this the same type of thing?

14. It does sound similar
My understanding: Dogs naturally explore the world with their mouths. That includes licking and biting. If a puppy is raised by other dogs, then at some point the dogs will get fed up with the constant "exploration" and do the usual disciplinary things, an occasional snap/bark, to teach the puppy the behavior is not okay.

When raised by humans, the same idea needs to be enacted on the puppy, but since Molly was neglected during her most impressionable years, nobody ever bothered to teach her not to lick. As a result, she loves to lick the furniture, the baseboards, her humans, the carpet (!), whatever she can get away with. She also favors licking her left rear paw, to the point that her tan fur around it becomes red (from enzymes in her saliva, not from irritation -- tho we've seen that too).

I have done some reading on the net, and apparently it's tough to break after about 1.5yrs. Training not to lick is an either-or thing, like feeding from the table or training not to jump up on people. That is, you must decide not to correct it and to let her lick, or if you do want to correct it, you must never let her lick. What makes it even harder is that so many people think it's cute to let a dog lick their face -- backsliding occurs in the form of what people take as affection (calling them "kisses," bleh). I've read it can be broken, but takes a LOT of work after they grow out of puppyhood.

Hope this info helps. If anyone has anything to add (or correct!) please do reply. Thx.

22. Sometimes it is affection, I think.
When I come in, my dog typically sniffs my face and flicks her tongue on my chin a few times. It does seem to be in greeting rather than compulsion, since it's pretty much the only time I see her lick at all, other than her toys and bones.

20. These are my babies...past and present
Edited on Thu Mar-10-05 06:39 PM by Greylyn58
This is my current baby and love, my golden retriever Sheridan

The two cats in the chair here have passed over to the Rainbow Bridge. They are Blue Boy and Tigger. Both were strays that I found.

And this was my baby girl Fritzie. When my husband and I divorced he kept her. I think about her often and hope he is taking care of her.

I love them all, even the babies that have passed on.

21. She is absolutely adorable!!!
Do you care if she is a purebred Chihuahua? My groomer used to say that she had a hard time with my cocker, Sheena's, face, since she would fight her. And I always said, it's not like like it's Westminster. She was clean and looked great, and, to me, that's all that counted. My guys are rescue, as well. One is purebred, the other is yet to be determined. But she's cute and I love her. And your little angel is just adorable! Thanks for sharing the great pix!:D

29. Nah, I really don't care either way, just curious!
She is a strange little muffin, though. Likes to DIG but does not like to dig in the dirt. So she digs on the couch, digs in her bed, digs on the carpet, digs on ME, etc. Very funny to watch.

27. He looks like the MENACE!
HAHA!! We adopted a kitten from our vet in 2003, but I had a small place, and with 3 cats, my allergies exploded. My godparents wanted a cat, but not a kitten, and he was fixed, etc. so I drove him out to OH to them, and they adore him. He is spoiled ROTTEN like your kitty, no doubt.

Here's Busterford Jones (aka B.J., the Menace)

Boris in his favorite chair.

Natasha beats him to the comfy chair once in awhile but she actually prefers the floor. Isn't she a pretty girl? Boris is the more comfort oriented one. If there's a free pillow in the house, he'll find it :-) .
