I have had her since last October, she is about 1 1/2 years (approximately). I got her from the local shelter and I love her. However, the last few months she has been spilling her water from her water bowl on my kitchen floor. At first, she would drag the bowl to the middle of the floor and of course it would spill along the way. So, I would move it back, and she would then move it back to middle of floor. So, I decided to make her water bowl a heavy glass bowl and set it on a towel so it is harder to drag. She has attempted to drag it, but cannot, so now she finds a way to spill the water (eventually empty the bowl). What should I do, and why the hell is she doing this?
Jessica Thank you.

I can't tell from the picture, but could my cat still stick her paw in and splash water on floor-I think that is what she does a lot?

3. I bet if you went to like one of the box pet stores |

like PETsMART or Petco, they'd have one they'd be happy to demo for you.
It's probably got a screen or something like that, and since that wouldn't be as much fun as splashing in the bowl, your determined kitty would find another hobby.

No big pet stores here, but a PETCO is opening up in a few weeks, so I will check it out and see what they have!

7. Well, I hope you can stand it until then. |

Or maybe you can find a smaller specialty pet store in your area. We've got at least three of the big boxes in town, but there are two or three small pet stores in my neightborhood alone -- one for birds, one for reptiles. I had to go and buy crickets for my friend's daughter's lizards one time.
Good luck.

look in the doggy section of a discount house for a weighted bowl for very large dogs. Yes, she can still put her paws in and splash, but for the time being, just set the bowl on newspaper to sop up the water.
I have no idea why kitty keeps doing this. Things that come to mind are an objection to the way tap water tastes (poor kitty, now butch up and drink it) and the fact that dipping her paws and then licking them might be how she learned how to drink it. If the latter is the case, you may need to get used to having her water bowl set on newspaper.

5. I don't know, since my cats weren't big drinkers. I always found it |

Hard to get my cats to drink as much as they should. Does she drink it, or just spill it? My little dog does this, but I know that he can't see well. Have you ever considered a fountain? Many cats prefer running water. I have a friend who turns on the faucet for her cat, when asked, but I do know those who opt for fountains, encouraging cats to drink. They were expensive, but I have seen the price go down. Of course, that doesn't mean that she won't try to drag it. I'd ask your vet. I hope to see one, tomorrow, unless the snow is too bad, and I'll ask. I pray for good weather, since both of my vets are away, my dog is sick and it's supposed to snow.

6. Good luck getting to vet in case of snow... |

I am pretty sure she drinks it. I do give her wet food and mix a lot of water in it, and she drinks that up. And the thought just dawned on me. Perhaps her dragging the bowl and spilling the water is her telling me she wants wet food (wet food is her treat) and she is "making me pay" for not giving her wet food as much as she wants it...?

14. Thank you, Jessica. The snow let up and we made it. Whew! |

My little guy is much better and finally eating again. They said that he'd have to be hospitalized, if he didn't eat! I picked up some liver, and cooked it for him, though mixed it with his food.:D
That is a very good point about the wet food. My cat would eat dry food as a snack, and I left it out for her, but she had to have wet for her meals. She was on prescription food twice. The first one was okay, since it came in canned, but the second one only came in dry and she raised a huge fuss! I felt terrible! I'm one for just feeding them what they like, as long as it's okay for them. And cats can be very discerning!:D

"moving water" to drink. Lots of cats will only drink out of a dripping sink or freshly flushed toilet, and refuse "still" water. You can try getting her a pet fountain (PetsMart or PetCo), that may do the trick.

10. "moving water" ... that's an interesting theory. My cat sticks his foot |
|
in the his water dish and stirs it up before he drinks it. I suppose that would be okay but my other cat always looks a little grossed out by it.

11. Well, the fountains seem to sell quite well |
|
so I guess there are a lot of pets out there that are insistent that water look fresh and "move" as it does in nature. My cats have a fountain and all three drink from it, though Oberon still prefers water straight from the tap in a cup in the sink.

17. My cat does that too!! He always looks like he is fishing |
|
for something in the fountain. Very rarely do I see him lap with his tongue like a normal cat, he seems to prefer to dip his paws and then lick them clean.
Bizarre.

Cats can do really strange things with water. I have a little "clothesline" in my bathroom, usually with wet cat toys hanging from it.

soap, loofas, pretty much everything..... and then proceeds to go fishing for them. Sometimes she falls in which can be scary since all my cats have every claw God made them with.
Naked in the tub with wet cats. :scared:

into the water bowl and then licks it
I also had a cat that would drop his toys into the water bowl, poke them around then scoop them out to continue playing with them
Our neighbors cat "scratches" at the floor in front of the water/food dishes before eating/drinking
We also had to watch our coffee cups with another cat -- he would get up on a chair, dip his paw into the coffee and lick it off

We struggled with the wet floor in the kitchen for awhile until I thought of putting her dish in the bathtub. Now she can splash to her heart's content and I don't have to worry about stepping in a puddle of water.

did the same thing. He would knock over the food and water dishes every time I left the house. I would come home to find soggy cat food all over my kitchen floor. I solved this problem by getting a shallow tray and putting the water and food dishes in it. This way, my cat can't tip over the bowls and my kitchen floor stays cat-food free.

18. My cats would do the same thing, and since there are two |
|
it was an everyday occurence, filling up a tipped bowl. I got one of the plastic fountains that holds quite a bit of water, use ONLY filtered water since cats hate chlorine, and got a rubber feeding mat to put under the fountain. The combo of those 3 things have solved my dish issues.
Now they drag the fountain across the room when it is empty (horrors!!) like you bad mom, where the hell is our WATER??
