I didn't know what a problem overpopulation was until a few months ago. I was thinking about getting a cat and started looking around the Internet, finding out as much as possible. Originally I wanted a purebred Ragdoll. What I got was a kitty from a rescue group at Petsmart and I couldn't be happier. I had no idea the number of healthy animals put down in our country for no other reason that homes can't be found. Healthy adopable animals with lots of love to give. After reading more and more about it, I knew I couldn't go the purebreed route after all. I went to Petsmart to look through the cats adopable there and found a orange and white tabby, about a year old. It seems the poor little kitty grew up a bit, and was no longer a kitten so someone taped him in a box with a few airholes, and dumped him at a low cost spay/neuter clinic here in town. One of the rescue groups they worked with took him in and they took him to Petsmart to find a home. As soon as I looked in his cage, he came over toward me and put his paw up on the glass as if to say hi. I felt like he wanted to come home with me and within hours I had my kitty. Now I preach adoption and spay/neuter to everyone who so much as mentions getting a pet.

A conservative estimate at the number of companion animals euthanized in our nation's shelters each year is around 6 million.
So... 6,000,000 each year 16,438 each day 685 each hour 11 each minute
While you watch your favorite sitcom, 343 dogs and cats will be put down. 170 while you eat breakfast. 10 died while you read this post. 2 more died while you pondered what I just said. Another one died just now...
