name that kitty! suggestions wanted
I brought home a kitten from work -- she's part of the feral colony of cats living in the shipping/receiving yard

she has an upper respiratory infection and is now on medication for it. (we have a follow-up vet appointment this week)

The intention was to get her healthy and then find a home for her. Well, she found a home - ours.... :eyes:

she's about 9-10 weeks old, tortise shell female and quite content to be picked-up and cuddled. (pics will follow when I get them preped for the computer)

Now she needs a name. I was calling her Bettie Davis because when I first found her - she was hissing and spitting, then came up to me and rubbed my hand. BUT my partner doesn't like giving animals "people names". We tried "shortening" the name to BD or Bee-Dee - but it doesn't fit

Her ownly "unusual" physical characteristic is a small tannish color tip on the end of her tail -- but q-tip or tippy for a name didn't appeal to us

our other cats are named: Kudra, Dutchess, Pookah and Gato

any suggestions?

1. On another board that I go to, someone named her cat "Kudzu"..
you could call her "Zuzu" for short a la "It's a Wonderful Life" and your partner could call her by the plant, non-human name.

2. Thats great to hear you've got a Tortie. We have one, and Tortie's are...

...great! Does she have Tortietude!?....

I don't know what to tell you on naming her. Thats always such a personal thing. Our Tortie is named Zoe. We have a Siamese/Tabby mix, and her name is Sascha, and we have a male Tabby named Burr.

A few names to throw out that are pretty to me, are Livia, Tatiana, or Mishka. The classical and Russian names always sound nice to me.

Glad to hear you've saved a little Tortie's life! :toast:

3. Well you could even call her tortie
or tuts. Anyway, try out a few names. If she comes running, that's her name.

5. If she's got any white on her...
...and thus qualifies as a calico, you could always name her Callie, which seems to be a standard name given to calicos.

None of the calicos or torties who have made their home with us would offer much inspiration in terms of appropriate names -- they were named Sonya (after the character in "War and Peace" who was often described as catlike), Lucy (name given by previous owner), and Mina (paisley's choice, for reasons I don't recall).

4. Or "Pace" (Pot-chay) for "peace"
As for giving pets people names, my friend dated a guy named Chip, whose sister was Muffy and brother was Trip (I kid you not).

Their dogs were named Susan and Bob.

We used to call it "the house where the people had dog names, and the dogs had people names".

6. Stop thinking about it and it will come to you.
It seems the most appropriate names for pets come when we don't view them head-on. Like nicknames and such. The night before I picked up our new guy, I dreamed his name was Renfield. We call him Ren. He's a crazy little booger, a wild thing, and as it turns out my dream was prophetic. Spend some time with your new kitten and it will come to you. Congratulations on the new addition to your family.

But really I think you should wait and tell by her personality.

My kittens were a few months old before I named them.

- With Nilla (Vanilla). Sometimes I call Mischief "gold paw".

8. A friend of mine...
had a calico/tortie looking sort of cat that they named "Monet" because of all the dots of different colors. :D
