Yeast problems in dogs?
I'll cross-post this in pets, but I thought I might have better luck posting here first.....I've just come back from my third EXPENSIVE trip to the vet in two months, the last two visits being to a veterinary dermatologist. Basically, my little guy Fred (a beagle) has not only severe allergies (to what, we haven't determined yet) but also a systemic yeast infection that isn't responding to antibiotics, nor to the expensive anti-bacterial shampoo I've been using for the past two weeks. I've come home with some NEW medicines to try....but has anyone ever had to deal with something like this? I'm thinking there's probably some sort of holistic approach we might want to try??

Other info - he's on week 8 of a Hypo Allergenic diet, so we're pretty sure it's not a food allergy. His problems pretty neatly coincided with moving to a new house, so we're thinking it's something either inside or in the yard that doesn't agree with him.

1. Antibiotics don't help yeast infections
In fact, they usually set the ground work for yeast infections to form. Your doggie needs probiotics. Does he like yogurt?

2. Great idea!
My dog loves it (as well as left over ice cream (I let him lick the bowl) Still trying to get rid of my "thrush" using "statin" drugs and acidophilis tablets. Have you thought about a soothing bath with baking soda and peroxide? (very diluted with warm water)

3. Antibiotics will make it worse.
Do everything you can to introduce probiotics into your pup's diet. You can break open acidophilus capsules and mix it with his food, as well as feed him yogurt and buttermilk.

My aunt used to feed her australian shepherd brewers yeast flakes for the skin allergies he shad. She would sprinkle a couple spoons of brewers yeast on his food.

5. Yes, make your dog eat like it would in the wild. throw away your dog food.
Avoid the "corn" products. Give the dog a mixture of rice, chicken broth, steamed carrots and peas, and meat (in the wild its uncooked, it may be too hard for the dog to process natural foods all at once, so ease into it.) There is no reason for your pet to die on processed pet food. Natural is good for them too.. the yeast infections will go away once you get rid of processed food diet (lots of antibiotics in the leftover parts of whatever they throw into dog food). Do a google search, you'll be amazed how we should be treating man's best friend vs. what we've been used to.

I used to go to the butcher's and buy what the Italians call "sufrite" sp?? It's the brains, heart and entrails etc. of cows. It was very cheap back then. I would boil it (to prevent chance of worms) grind it up and freeze it in it's juices, to add to the rice only kibble I fed. They thrived on it.
