1. Brave of you!
Damn, there seem to be a lot of "woo woo" topics in the main part of DU lately. Makes for a lot of open warfare. Is it something to do with a planetary aspect (she asks in all seriousness)?

4. Privately I have speculated that attitudes ARE changing even if I don't always feel it.
It isn't just the increased discussion about "woo woo" stuff out in the rest of DU, but also other things that I'm noticing out in the rest of the world.

We are bookstore people. Our idea of a big time out on the town involves eating dinner someplace and then hitting the local bookstores and coffee shops. It has become so deeply ingrained that our daughter and her pals (who come with us sometimes) all ask what bookstore we are gonna go to after dinner, and they debate endlessly on what non-coffee item they are gonna order once we've all found a book. (I WARNED you we are geeks--ok?)

Anyhow, as a book person, about four or five years ago I began to notice the number of books in the mass market that have some sort of "woo woo" component. It used to be that it was the SF section that you found the occasional witch and vampire tales, but now they are in the romance sections, the pop fiction sections, and even the mystery sections! I'm seeing what was traditionally viewed as "occult" subject matter all across the boards. I finally asked my husband if he had noticed it and he said that he'd spotted that trend too.

There are entire sections in the teen collection that deal with these subjects (in part due to the Twilight phenom and Harry Potter before that) and I am at a loss to explain why that is except that it seems to be a LOT more accepted than it used to be.

Have you noticed the increased amount of TV shows with some sort of metaphysical subject matter? Ghost hunters are even a big part of the TRAVEL channel if you can believe that! I am amazed at the number of TV programs on network that deal with some sort of occult or arcane subjects!

I know there are still a lot of people out there who view science as their religion. I figure that is great if it is working for them, but I am just amazed at how much stuff is out there that would be at home in this forum.

21. I've noticed more metaphysical stuff out there too ...
... which is nice to see.

As re: "discussing" these concepts with skeptics - I go back and forth on this. If I thought they were actually interested in being open minded, I'd join the discussion. Like freepers, though, it seems they want to just yank chains back and forth and I've no interest in being part of that. So, choose your battles, I suppose.

30. There's much wisdom in what you say
and I wish I had thought about that aspect before I jumped into the fray ;)

More random shit has been left up in DU for far longer. What was that all about?

6. It must have been unlocked when it was moved to the Lounge
because I just posted to it. And likely caused a few science-only types to shake their heads in wonder or perplexity ;)

10. You kiddin' me?
I recently had a couple of knock-down drag-outs with some...Very Special DUers...in R/T, and while I kept to the light, I can't say for sure that if I started another "debate" this soon I'd be able to refrain from going over to the dark side and...expressing myself toward them...if you know what I mean! :P

11. I stay out of R/T for the most part, and probably for what you are inferring
for myself, too ;)

It looks like this one has either stopped or given up, or whatever, though. I'm sure there's a counter to it, but the power of the dictionary is hard to refute :P

The tenacity is strong with this one. How much time ya got?

Oh nearly forgot--I noticed my favorite guys (Top Gear) are going to be in your GF's country. Tell her to say hey to them for me! :hi:

(Yeah, I know NZ is kinda large.)

So, we'll see where it goes.

Thanks for the heads-up on Top Gear. I'll let her know :)
("gf/bf" status has devolved between us to "just friends" for the time being...)

The discussion can flounder for all I care. I'm trying to get its eyes to open up to a bigger picture, but I know it's likely a fruitless endeavor ;)

19. I haven't seen that movie in so long that I only know your quote comes from it
;)

I get the idea of it, though :)
And I am trying to keep my head in the light, too. I just started reading Wayne Dyer's "Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life" which is his version of ten translations of the Tao Te Ching. We'll see what the impact is, but I'm guessing it will be profound at the very least :D
(actually, it already has been...)

Cool about Wayne Dyer. Def share your experiences in ASAH--I am sure you'll get tons of interest! How has it changed you so far?

Funny--I just started some affirmations today myself--coinkydink? :) (Oh wait--I don't believe in coincidences--!)

23. So far, it was just a feeling of bliss, seemingly triggered while I was writing
on my "book". I was also at a pizza joint at the time

Okay, I've bowed out of that "discussion" for the time being. I see that HFCS has joined the fray, though weakly. You're welcome to take over until I get back ;)

Actually, I'm interviewing an author of a book about small businesses. Which reminds me--gotta finish the last chapter and organize my questions...!

but I don't feel the need to convince anyone. I just think that the bullying threads lately have a connection to this one - people hurting others without reason.

27. There is no convincing some people
The bullying, twisting of words, and general fostering of mayhem is out of control. It's not about convincing anyone of anything anymore; it's all a big pissing contest to see who can insult "the other" fastest and most viciously. Then, when the damage is done, "victory" is declared even though no one vanquished anyone. Rinse, repeat. It's really getting boring, but I think more and more DUers in general are catching on to the pointless disruption (from both sides). At least I hope so.
