1. No, it doesn't 'end'.
It's the 'end' of a cycle - they felt that there were 4 <5?>
'lives' that the Earth would cycle through, the previous ones ended by Fire, Water, and Heat <I believe>. I'm pretty sure we are on Round 4.

There are a few older threads in this forum which discuss it in more detail, if you want to scroll back a few pages ... and also, I'm sure some of the 'regulars' who study Mayan history in-depth than I do have the appropriate info.

2. Actually, I think it does end, doesn't it?
At least, I don't recall ever reading anything about what comes next in any future Mayan calendar, tho I do agree that it's the ending of a cycle, or the current world (whatever name they used for that).

There've been a number of discussions on the subject.

3. Read all about it: steep uphill climb to 2012
http://www.chiron-communications.com/communique%207-10.html

As we pass through transition there is a colossal, global convergence of environmental destruction, social chaos, war, and ongoing Earth changes. All this, Mr. Barrios says, was foreseen via the simple, spiral mathematics of the Mayan calendars.

"It will change," Mr. Barrios observes. "Everything will change." He said Mayan Daykeepers view the Dec. 21, 2012 date as a rebirth, the start of the World of the Fifth Sun. It will be the start of a new era resulting from — and signified by — the solar meridian crossing the galactic equator, and the earth aligning itself with the center of the galaxy.

At sunrise on December 21, 2012 — for the first time in 26,000 years — the Sun rises to conjunct the intersection of the Milky Way and the plane of the ecliptic, describing in the sky a great cross of stars and planets. This cosmic cross is considered to be an embodiment of the Sacred Tree, The Tree of Life — a tree remembered in all the world’s spiritual traditions.

Some observers say this alignment with the heart of the galaxy in 2012 will open a channel for cosmic energy to flow through the earth, cleansing it and all that dwells upon it, raising all to a higher level of vibration. This process has already begun, Mr. Barrios suggested. "Change is accelerating now, and it will continue to accelerate."

4. Ruh-roh.
What do you make of this?

According to Mr. Barrios’ reading of the Mayan calendar, if war happens in November 2002 or after, then it’s bad, but not catastrophic. But if it happens between April and November 2003, it will be catastrophic. Really bad. It could eventually result in the death of two-thirds of humanity. "So stay active," he said. "If we are active, we can transform the planet. The elders watch to see what happens."

5. Hi Spiralhawk...glad you posted this
heres a link to other other articles...

Here's another....haven't read this completely but they are discussing the Mayan long count and how it corresponds to the Gregorian calendar...interesting...

Another equally compelling reason why December 21, 2012 cannot be the true date of completion of creation is that this day is 4 Ahau in the tzolkin count. Since the Long Count consists of exactly 7200 tzolkin rounds then the true end of creation must fall on a day that is 13 Ahau in the tzolkin count so that the tzolkin rounds even out. If we want to find out what is the real date of ending of the creation cycles we must therefore look for a day around the year 2012, which is 13 Ahau in the tzolkin count. The inscriptions in Palenque, written about a thousand years later than the Long Count was devised in Izapa, seem to indicate that the date of relevance is October 28, 2011, which in fact is 13 Ahau in the tzolkin count.

8. Miscellaneous....
"...new era resulting from — and signified by — the solar meridian crossing the galactic equator, and the earth aligning itself with the center of the galaxy.

A bit of the online information suggests that this will happen during the winter solstice of 2012 at 11:11 am UT (checked date and time per U.S. Naval Observatory calculations), but I've looked at that date from an astrological perspective, and well, I'm not certain that writing down "my" impressions wouldn't skew the outcome of that moment in some way.

There's an astronomer online who's analyzed this meridian crossing, he calls it a non-event, the bottom line of his info is the crossing occurs each year between the years 1955 and 2100, and he has some graphics from some astronomy program to prove his case. Further, he suggests the "center" of this meridian crossing is around the year 2030.

From an astrological view, most calendars that I'm familiar with are based upon planetary and orbital phenomenon of some kind, but imperfectly so. Our own calendar is off by a 1/4 day each year. I don't wish to become a Mayan Calendar expert, simply because I have other interests to occupy my time, but I have little doubt that our own society's observation of the stars has exceeded the capabilities of the Mayan's, leading me to believe that while their calendar may offer some insight into some longer-term orbital phenomenon than our own, the timing of said phenomenon would likely be off by some amount at the end of their 'projection' of its next occurrence, however slight, and that any time error it may contain would likely be magnified by the total length of the calendars longest time period, but that probable error I cannot judge one way or the other. This error is perhaps why their calendar ends, perhaps they felt that new observations at the time would need to be made to iteratively tune the 'new' calendars timing.

7. Lots of info & links here....
by Carl Johan Calleman.

One in particular is interesting as it is about the Dreamspell calendar that has been popularized since the early 90's.The whole thing is long but a good enlightening read. Some of the other articles on this site also deal with prophecies.

Living the Mayan Calendar is also good....
http://www.calleman.com/engartiklar/nya%20artiklar/livingcalendar.htm

The False Mayan Calendar: The Dreamspell/13 Moon Calendar

"Yet, in present day Guatemala significant aspects of the ancient
calendar system, such as the haab and the tzolkin (Cholquij) went
underground and has survived until the present time in its highlands. It
can be verified from archeological artifacts that the Sacred Calendar
have been kept unaltered by the daykeepers of the Quiché-Maya since
antiquity. My own view is that this particular true tzolkin count is a
gift to the future of humanity if we can only make the right use of it.

Today, increasing number of people that are starting to use this Sacred
Calendar are experiencing the energies of time that it describes. Yet,
it is not part of the Dreamspell/Thirteen Moon calendar the main reason
being that this makes a jump every four years on the leap day in the
Gregorian calendar, a day that according to the Dreamspell has no
tzolkin energy. Hence the experience of the flow of the energies of time
is broken at this day and the day-signs and numbers of the following day
will shift one step in relation to the true tzolkin count. Over several
decades passing through many leap days this creates a very substantial
scrambling effect. Thus people that have their day-signs and numbers
calculated according to this invented tzolkin count will never conform
to the true ones based on an uninterrupted flow of time.
Adam Rubel of
Saq Be, an organization reflecting indigenous and especially Mayan views
says: "Regarding the dreamspell and work of Arguelles: It has been made
clear, I think everybody here understands, the need to distinguish this
system from any relation to the Mayan tradition. This is the wish
of the elders, that the confusion and misrepresentation cease."

Also.... The Dreamspell/Thirteen Moon calendar and
the Mayan calendar. What are the differences?
