Question about Pluto and Mars
From reading here and on Starlight News I see that aspects of Pluto and Mars can be disruptive. What if an entity experiences a transiting Mars natal Pluto conjunction while also experiencing a Pluto/Pluto trine? Does the trine buffer the effects of the Mars conjunction?

1. What a great question.
I wonder why nobody bothered to answer it yet? Here's my answer. I think one common denominator between the three conceptualizations I've written below is that there's an added emphasis on the energy Pluto represents. But knowing the various systems does nothing to answer your question explicitly.

Under my understanding of Harmonic Astrology, the 'basic' answer is no, there's simply a harmonic wave expressed where Pluto's energy at the Mars/Pluto conjunction is added to by 1/3. That said, there are more complex understandings such as those of scale and tone (think music), that may be closely related to astrology. The 3rd harmonic (in astrology a 'grand trine') may be closely and may not be exactly related to a chord composed of thirds, specifically augmented such as C augmented (c e g#), which is sometimes called an augmented triad. Therefore, the more complex answer is yes.

The reason I wrote above "may be closely and may not be exactly related" is that there appears to be compromises in today's musical scale frequencies versus exact mathematical divisions. Here's a curious graphic:

In classic music theory, here's a circle of fifths:

Under Cyclical understandings of astrology, transiting Pluto trine natal Pluto tells of two particular points of the cycle relative to the whole cycle from one conjunction to the next, in Pluto's case about 248 years later. Therefore, the entity under study becomes critical to the understanding of the Pluto cycle that Mars is currently interacting with. A human entity never lives long enough to see a complete Pluto cycle, and only some generations live long enough to see 'the first' 1/3 of Pluto's cycle, depending upon the speed of Pluto which is much faster at perihelion than aphelion relative to other planets.

I thought I'd throw this link in (like I did with the music diversion), I found it recently and it's a good article with respect towards long-term Pluto/Neptune cycles how aspects are sometimes used in cyclical astrology to study past events. Palden Jenkins says of the days we're in right now, with respect to the Pluto/Neptune cycle, specifically the years 1950-2031:

At the waxing sextile (60°), germinated seeds become visible plants, growing wildly, everywhichway. This rushing time of escalation and unfoldment, in Neptune-Pluto's case, can be drawn-out but intense, as the 1950s-80s have been in our own time.

Under Traditional Western (as I understand it) the answer is yes, Pluto's energy is modified to be more 'beneficial' and 'positive' at these times. However, there are at least four sub-schools or components under this methodology: aspects, signs, rulerships, and houses. These four may be related to each other, and the ordering of the list can be altered. This means that every Pluto/Pluto trine possible is not equal to the others.

Considering your basic question with respect toward the above, I'd say the answer is yes.

2. Much depends on the phasal relationship of Mars/Pluto.
For instance, what is the natal relationship of Mars to Pluto in the birhtchart? Is this transiting conjunction in a waxing or waning phase to date? What sign and house is Pluto in? What sign and house is Mars in natally?

In ancient astrology(before the discovery of Pluto)Mars was the ruler of Scorpio. It now shares rulership with Pluto of that sign. Mars is the energy that Pluto uses to carry out its dualistic desire nature. With Mars forming a transiting conjunction, an entire cycle of the Pluto/Mars archetype has come to a close and a new beginning. When waxing, a summing up of lessons learned, relationships lost or deepend, power gained or lost, unresolved psychological/social/sexual issues finding their way to the consciousness, a dissatisfaction with the current status quo and a the beginning of a new desire begins to take shape. A finishing up of the destruction/removal of outmoded ways of thinking, acting and being are in their final stages. As the new desire begins to take shape, Mars is given its marching orders during the exact conjunction and starts out on the orders during the waning conjunction(as Mars moves away from Pluto). These desires will all be predicated upon the natal placement of Mars and its natal phasal relationship to Pluto. A good book on this is a book by Jeffrey Wolf Green: Pluto; The Soul's Evolution through Relationships.
