I want to learn more about my haunting. Any thoughts?
I posted awhile back in someone else's ghost thread about the haunting I grew up with.

In my childhood home, living in an attic room, I always felt that someone was in the room with me. It was always from the same corner of the room. My siblings also reported feeling the same thing...and in the same area (without my telling them where it was).

My chilhood friends, as well as my pets, would never stay in the room for long at all without wanting out. The room was decorated in a cheery manner but always felt gloomy, or shadowed if you will. The air always felt heavy.

I spent eighteen years in the house, but sometimes for months at a time would sleep in another room out of genuine fear. Sometimes the presence was so strong I could literally feel it standing right next to my bed as I tried to sleep. I got a bad feeling from it.

Some experiences I had in the house were items disappearing/reappearing elsewhere, distinct knocking noises (sometimes I knocked back, and my knocks would be copied exactly), dishes rattling (only once), and every few months, for years, something would shake my bed while I tried to get to sleep. Like someone was holding onto the mattress and shaking it. I also often heard someone walking up the stairs, occasional banging noises, and what sounded like women talking downstairs in the wee hours of the morning when everyone was in bed (these things were also reported by siblings).

I've gotten a little feedback from one DU'er but I'm curious to know more. What did I grow up with in my house?

1. trying to get your attention
I don't know why.

Did you feel it was a child or adult? Certainly not pleasant shaking your bed - I wonder if that person is still there..whoever it is needs to know it's time to go and it is ok.

sorry not much help here..

2. I felt it was an adult.
Not a very friendly one. I had a bad feeling from it. I didn't feel it was violent per se, but that it was someone just not very good.

3. Well, I guess no one has any feedback on this one...
Any ideas on what sort of psychic/adviser I could go to for info on this?

Are there any well-recognized/reputable psychics that I could contact that specialize in hauntings?

7. Google for "sensitives" in your area.
The more "recognized"/"reputable" readers in the world are usually either hard to find, hard to access and/or extremely expensive.

4. sounds like a ghost, but dunno
and since you sound like you aren't living there anymore there's little in the way of testing out your hypothesis.

could've been a sad spirit upset at an untimely death. considering it was the attic, and felt like an adult, makes me lean close to the idea that it was a suicide, possibly by hanging. not overtly malicious, but pretty unpleasant, which would sound like the carry over of despair and bitterness of a suicide. probably wanted to either be left alone to brood, most likely. or could possibly wanted to communicate, less likely.

the fact that your siblings, pets, and childhood friends all felt various incarnations of ill ease in the room, and occasionally various phenomena rules out night terrors. it also rules out personal hallucinations. also the frequency rules out random mind tricks from exhaustion.

it could possibly be a localized mass hallucination. but there's several factors that dissuade that argument. first off, it happened more than once, at different times, and with different variables of people/living things present. second, it couldn't be a function of bad decor, poor feng shui or the like, because you said it was decorated in a cheery manner and the atmosphere was the exact opposite.

no, through a process of elimination we are left with a difficult to explain condition. it *could* be a ghost. i myself am prone to agreeing that it is a ghost. what details of circumstantial evidence we have tends to lend credence to a genuine haunting, and a particularly localized haunting at that. with what i have to go with you grew up with an unhappy camper of a ghost in your attic.

it *could* be something else that took residence there. but considering the gloom, while lack of life-threatening malice, and the relatively low level of livelihood interference i would say ghost of a suicide. the veil was harder to breach, the will to destroy and corrupt not present, the general dissuasion of company, etc. lends me to that conclusion.

check the history of the house. i'm sure there's some microfiche in the library about any news articles on the house. you could possibly even get a name for your "border."

5. "checking the history" sound good to me, too
The property records may give you a glimpse of who owned it and why or when it transferred - then you may want to check on certain names and orbituaries.

6. Yeah...I'm pretty sure it was a ghost.
Another DU'er said she thought it was a ghost from long ago that actually didn't ever reside in my house. That makes sense because the house wasn't that old when my family moved in.

8. the land ...
what was there before? Before it was developed - perhaps a battlefield -

many devlopers also ignored to bring in archaeologists when they stumbled upon artifacts so they can quietly finish without delay.

9. Well, I believe it had just been fields/ farmland.
But it's in the midwest and I know that in our surrounding area a lot of Civil War action took place.

I don't know...it's just always bothered me that I grew up with that ghost or whatever, and it's a mystery I'd love to solve. Probably because the ghost felt unfriendly, and I'm always reading about people's "friendly" hauntings. Why was mine so unfriendly-feeling?

11. hmm, almost like a fun mystery. could be disturbed grave...
check civil war records, that'd be a good place to work on. can't do as much as you could if you had access to the house. but checking history is kinda neat. might piece together a real cool story.

12. Another DU'er awhile back said she thought a body might be
buried under the property.

She also thought the entity in question was an almost-sadistic man who had killed his ailing daughter.

I'm interested to find out what another person sensitive to ghosts might think...

13. Have you ever seen the movie, The Changeling? It was made
in the 1980s and starred George C. Scott. I don't want to give away the whole plot in case you want to check out this film, but it is one of the best "haunting" movies I've ever seen.
