NASA lander may have found toxic substance on Mars
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 4, 2008 (Reuters) — The Phoenix Mars Lander may have detected perchlorate, a potentially toxic substance used in rocket fuel, in soil samples taken from the Red Planet, NASA scientists said on Monday.

The space agency said further tests were required to confirm the presence of perchlorate in Martian dirt and rule out contamination from the spacecraft.

I dunno...something about this smells. Doesn't ring true to me. First, on Friday, NASA finds "something" on Mars and immediately goes to the PRESIDENT to brief him (!) (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x3420606) Now this report today, and it turns out to be some toxic substance that we might have put there ourselves from the landers...? Seems a little anticlimactic.

there's not too much that comes from NASA anymore that I believe. It's been like that for years, and more so now with Edgar Mitchell being so open about his knowledge of EBEs!

I think it was the rush to brief the president that got me hemming and hawing on this one. Since when does NASA move so fast to alert the president about anything, AND it gets in the paper? :shrug:
