Recommendation for good general internal cleansing?
I'm surprised there is no alternate health forum here at DU. I'm sure those of you here have good recommendations in this regard.

Can you please recommend a good internal cleansing system, preferably able to be purchased at Whole Foods or other retail outlet, though I can order online as well?

There isn't anything specific going on. I just feel in dire need of a thorough cleansing; I feel bloated and sluggish and HEAVY. Ughhhhhhh.

Also, any thoughts on regular use of cod liver oil...or castor oil?

Thanks! :)

1. Can't answer that specifically, but when I'm feeling the way you describe

I begin with a hot soak in Epsom Salt (...what's that? I think I hear Stellanoir coming...).
Walgreens sells a 22 oz. size container (perfect for one or two baths) that has lavender scent.
You will feel rejuvenated.

Wonderful for drawing out toxins, provides important magnesium sulfate not to mention it's relaxation value. Ahhhhhhh....

13 Wonderful Ways to Use Epsom Salts

When magnesium sulfate is absorbed through the skin, such as
in a bath, it draws toxins from the body, sedates the nervous
system, reduces swelling, relaxes muscles, is a natural
emollient, exfoliator, and much more....cont'd

DeTox Bath

Minerals and salts make the bath water feel silky and leave your skin cleansed and soft.

1 cup sea salts
2 cups baking soda
1 cup Epsom salts
1 to 2 tablespoons glycerin per bath

Combine the sea salts, baking soda, and Epsom salts in a bowl. Stir to blend. Pour 1/4 cup or so into the bath while the tub is filling. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons glycerin to keep your skin from drying out (more for dry skin, less for oily skin) and essential oils of choice.

Preparation time: 2 to 3 minutes
Shelf life: Indefinite
Storage: Glass jar with a screw top

Caution: Do not take hot baths and salt baths (including Epsom salt baths) if you have heart trouble, high blood pressure, or are diabetic.

Before soaking I try to get in a good brisk walk or some other aerobic exercise.

2. Master Cleanse
I use Epsom baths too, usually just use Epsom salt alone. And I do especially like the Lavender blend Dover mentions.

I keep buying organic lemons to start this cleanse, but my schedule is so unpredictable right now, I've not started yet. I do know someone who has been doing it, and she says her head is much clearer. My homeopathic practitioner recommends it as well.

4. Hey, I just bought lemons! Yay!
I asked a friend what she does for cleansing, and she simply uses lemon and warm water.

(BTW, on a completely different note, I just read this morning about the benefits of honey and cinnamon...so I put a little peanut butter, honey and cinnamon on a whole-grain waffle and it was yummmmmmmy.)

I'll check out Master Cleanse. Thank you very much as well! :)

12. I second the Master Cleanse option.
I've done it several times over the past several years and always have great results. :hi:

5. Aloe Vera juice and ginger tea
Both are gentle and safe unless contraindicated due to health conditions and or medication interactions. Check with your doctor if you are on meds or have certain health conditions.

There are other agents that are harder on the system but these at least have nutritional health benefits as well.

8. I'll attest to the fact that aloe vera works. I use capsules.
For me, it's not always gentle (especially if too much is used), but it certainly works.

10. This could be a sign of lack of proper digestion. cider vinegar before a meal helps many
I have reflux so I couldn't try that myself. My second choice to help my digestive issues was digestive enzymes and for me they have worked wonders. In two weeks I was down almost a pant size as the bloating I thought was fat went away. If you choose to try this look for a brand that has enzymes for carbs, protein and fat to cover all your bases. A good brand will list the units of activity so compare them to find one that suits your needs. I have been using Megazyme by Enzymatic Therapy but there are others which are probably just as good but as it's worked so good for me I am not going to switch. I have seen it at Whole Foods for around $10 more than I get it online.

11. Hi, Shallah...
I just recently started taking Whole Foods' brand enzymes more regularly. Not sure if that covers carbs, protein and fat, though, so I will check that out and get another if their brand doesn't do so.

I haven't been taking it regularly, so that's another step that could help tremendously.

Thank you. :)

13. I find they work best for me if I take them 5 to 10 minutes before eating
although they still help even if I forget and take them halfway through a meal. Protease digests protein, amylase digests carbohydrates and lipase is for fat. Here is the enzymes I have been taking with a copy of the label listing the units of activity:
http://www.vitacost.com/Enzymatic-Therapy-Mega-Zyme-10X#IngredientFacts

I also take probiotics daily and they also helped but not as much as the enzymes. I alternate right now between natrol's biobeads and Kyolic 9 as they both have a different variety of strains of good bacteria plus don't need to be refrigerated. also I am allergic to milk so it is darned hard to find probiotics that don't have at least trace amounts and neither have dairy nor have given me even a hint of reaction :)

15. About enzymes...
thanks for the breakdown of which enzymes affect what. Whole Foods' brand has those plus about five others, so that's good.

I've always wondered in the back of my mind whether the enzymes contribute to bloating, or if that would be the case if enzymes are taken not in conjunction with meals.

Any experience or feedback in that regard?

17. I was always burping before I took enzymes with my meals
no matter what I ate and months after I had given up soda. I currently have celiac so my absorption of nutrients is greatly hindered although I am one of those some 50% of celiacs who are overweight *and* malnurished. Somehow the calories got absorbed just fine :( Anyhow I figure because my absorption is bad so I am lacking nurtients which among other things are needed to make enzymes so my digestion gets worse because of the lower rate of enzymes creating a vicious cycle. That is my theory but all I now for sure is if I don't take enzymes before a meal I am full of burps. If I at least take it half way through I do burp some but nothing like if I totally skip the enzymes. The only thing that makes me burpy with enzymes is if I eat a lot of broccoli that hasn't been cooked until limp. If I only stirfry broccoli makes me burp.

To make a long story short in my case enzymes reduced and most of the time eliminates bloating. I do take another enzyme to help my wonky knees and low back that is called serrazimes (related in effect to serrapeptase but from a safer and less expensive source) that I take first thing after getting up before eating. That one does make me burp a few times but no bloating

14. Cayce's recommendations.
colonics: Everybody he says should have a colonic once a year

apple diet: Eat nothing but apples for three days. On the third day have a large amount of olive oil. The impurities can be cleansed from any system this way, Cayce said.

castor oil packs: Recommended for almost all problems involving assimilation or intestinal problems. Soak a flannel cloth folded over once or twice in warm castor oil, place the flannel over the abdomen, cover with a plastic cover and put a heating pad on top, keep it there for about an hour (30 minutes to an hour before sleep is very effective). I've found I can just rub the castor oil directly onto my abdomen, cover with a towel and the plastic cover and heating pad, nd it works just about as well.

16. Interesting....
Good reminder: I've added apples to my grocery list. :)

I still need to research castor oil, as well as cod liver oil, and the concensus on those as daily dietary supplements. I certainly had never heard of castor oil applied in this manner, but it makes sense to me.

Thank you!
