Reiki / healing light for my dog?
I feel awkward asking for help, since I'm brand new here. But it's not for me, it's for my dog Jake, who is sick and injured with we know not what. For him I would do anything.

So you can recognize him, Jake is a coming 4 year old (probably early Scorpio) sable/black lab/chow/heinz-57 shelter dog who was rescued as a puppie from death row in Arkansas, along with his siblings, mother and some other puppies and their mothers. He's been with me since Christmas, 2004. I waited 20 years to be able to get a dog, and he is the love of my life.

He's been having problems with his back off and on for several months. They seemed related to a specific incident and I thought he was healed, but the pain flared up with diahrrea and weight loss in the last week. X-rays today showed several vertibrae pressed too close together, so he may have several slipped discs. We're hoping the pain is just inflammation and are trying Metacam as a diagnostic tool. They also showed borderline dysplasia on one hip, so once he's better we'll probably start glucosomine to prevent arthritis.

The diahrrea is more problematic. All fecal tests came back negative, so we're trying just a bland diet for a couple days to see if it clears up on its own.

The weight loss could be due to the diahrrea, but until that clears up we won't know. If it doesn't clear up, than he goes back next week for blood tests.

But that's not the worst of it. The x-rays shows his liver is rounded instead of pointed. That means either a hematoma (but there hasn't been any serious trauma that I'm aware of, and how could he have such a serious injury without my knowing it?!), an abcess from infection (which bloodwork will turn up and which also could account for the weight loss)...or cancer.

I'm also worried because he was knocked out so heavily from the sedation for x-rays, more than the vet expected. 6 1/2 hours later, although he woke up enough to eat a huge meal of boiled skinless chicken and white rice, he's still very lethargic. After Karen Bishop's last post, when she said some of our companions would choose to leave, I've been really afraid of losing him.

I'd be very grateful for any healing energy you can send his way. He is a very special, beautiful, loving spirit. He loves everybody. Everybody.

1. Oh, northernlights, you don't have to be here any specific...
amount of time to ask for help.

I'm so sorry that this is happening. I will certainly send healing light and energy Jake's way. He sounds like such a lovely boy.

If it's OK, I'll also pray for him. Are you comfortable with prayer?

2. prayer is fine too
Whatever will help him. It's been 6 1/2 hours since she injected him and he's still just lying on the floor, not moving. He tipped his tail a tiny bit just now when I checked on him...

I promised him he'll feel much better in the morning when the sedative has worn off and the metacam kicked in. I'm afraid if there is a problem with his liver that it will have a hard time filtering the sedative out of his system.

3. I'm giving Jake a virtual pat on the head
And sending love, too. I hope he gets well soon.

You also might want to read Dover's now locked thread in Health on superoxide dismutase, because it was mostly about veterinary antioxidents. I contributed to it. I'm sort of surprised it was locked.

4. Dream is right, you shouldn't hesitate to ask for help
Although I know how you feel, because I did too for a long time.

I'm so sorry this is happening to Jake and to you. I will do my best to send positive energy to you both.

I'm no psychic, but after I read your post I simply burst into tears. That doesn't happen to me usually. I'm not sure what it means. I will hope for the very best outcome, but I think you may want to prepare yourself for the possibility that he may be getting ready to move on.

I'm so sorry. Love and light to you and Jake.

5. Blessings of healing to Jake, and you
Also, see if he will eat some plain yogurt. That might help a bit with the diarrhea.

8. happy update
First, thank you all for your healing energy, light, reiki, prayers, and wishes!

This morning was tough -- Jakey seemed in more pain by far than when he went to the vet yesterday, when he was bouncing around but limping. I was really despairing and bracing myself for the worst.

When I got home from my class at around 2pm, I found him lying in the family room near where I'd left him, but now upright and alert. I thought I would help him outside so he could lay in the sun. I opened the door to the outside -- and he lept to his feet, bounded out the door and trotted and galloped around like I haven't seen him move in ages -- easily, comfortably, light on his feet, tail wagging and eyes bright.

The best response possible, since the vet said she was using the Metacam as a diagnostic tool. It indicates it is inflammation causing the problem, and was the best possible outcome.

I have revived hope for the diahrrea as well. I've had him on a hypoallergenic diet (California Naturals) since he was a pup, but switched 6 weeks ago to Nutro, which I thought was also hypoallergenic. This morning, I read the label more closely and saw 3 evil letters in the middle of the ingredients -- SOY oil. I think he's allergic to soy. I'll know for sure in a couple days, if and when the diahrrea clears up. Then it's back to the original diet.

Again, thank you all. Jakey's tail is wagging and when I sit with him he licks my face and knees again!

13. I am so glad to hear this. And..
I want to thank you for opening this thread. Officially, I don't really "do" Reiki. I've benefited from it, in a big way. A few years ago, someone offered, online, to give me a long-distance attunement. It came with no training, no nothing. I don't know if that "counts." I haven't done much with it. Mostly because I don't really know what I'm doing, and because I don't know how authentic that attunement was.

When I saw your thread, I sent some light to Jake. THAT I can do. I also gave myself a metaphorical kick and rushed out to the barn, because I had an animal in distress myself, and I hadn't thought to use Reiki. Even though I've used it on her before.

My oldest mare is 19, and nursing her last filly. I used it on her during her pregnancy, to encourage both she and the foal to thrive, and to encourage an easy delivery. If that's what I was doing without any training, lol. I ground, center, place my hands over the area in question without touching, and focus my intent. Anyway, we had a fast, easy delivery, a healthy, strong filly, and a healthy mom last May. So fast, in fact, that while I was checking every 2 hours for any signs of impending labor, and found the mare standing in a corner dozing at 8:30, by 10:30 when I went back out it was all over, and a wet, alert little filly was on the ground. Why didn't I remember when she needed me this time?

Anyway, after reading your thread, I rushed back out to the barn. At dinner that evening, the mare had shown some mild symptoms of colic. Mild or not, colic is a horse killer, so I did everything I knew to do. I didn't call the vet for more severe treatments, because the symptoms were so mild. I did plan to keep a regular watch that night in case things worsened. I spent some time with her, wondering why I didn't think of energy work in addition to the other things I'd done.

Happily, by the time I went to bed that night, she was eating dinner, and by morning she was her usual hungry, lively self. :D

So...thank you. She might have recovered by herself. My time doing energy work out there with her might not have made any difference. I believe that it did, though. Why did I need someone else to ask for assistance for an animal to "remember?" I can only attribute it to first week of school overload. I'm a teacher.

That mare is the 3rd generation of horses that have been in my family since before I was born. I grew up with her parents and grandparents. She, and her 2 daughters, are the last of the line. She's not "just" a horse. She's family.

14. that's so cool, Lwolf
I have 2 arabians, an elderly gelding that I rescued almost 19 years ago, and an 3 year old spoiled princess brat that I got 18 months ago. I can't imagine having the same family of horses for generations -- that's really cool. My vets have always had me give them a dose of banamine and monitor with a mild colic. If they aren't eating and bright-eyed after an hour or so, then they'll come out.

Jakey is doing well back and hip-wise, but unfortunately, the diarrhea is worse -- neon yellow liquid now! So much for the blank diet. So I gave him a big dose of pepto-bismol and will call the doctor in the morning. Guess it's time for bloodwork. At least I know his urinalysis was negative and normal on all counts.

15. I'll keep thinking healthy thoughts for Jake.
I got a phone call this afternoon. An elderly family member, the guy who began this line of horses with a weanling colt he was given as a high school graduation gift in 1945, called me from 1,000 miles away to let me know.

My older mare is the youngest of 5 out of the best, and last, daughter of that weanling colt. Most of her older siblings are gone now, and she's the only breeding mare out of her siblings.

The call was to let me know that her last sibling, an elderly gelding, passed. Coincidentally, or not, the night she had that mild colic. He passed peacefully, in his sleep, no distress. Before I moved away 3 years ago, she'd spent her entire life in the same herd with her older brother.

The gelding was his personal riding horse. Not that he rides any more, but he was his LAST riding horse. He was eager to hear about how my mare, and her two daughters, last of the line, are doing. He wants to make a trip up to visit them, even though I think the drive is beyond him these days.

I've been holed up in my shell today, nostalgic and a little sad. All my roots are going, one by one, and few but me remember them. I'm not that old, lol!

I'm out of banamine. It's been 3 years since I needed any; we used it for an allergic reaction to an insect bite. I should have been keeping some on hand. Reiki is also anti-inflammatory, lol, so I guess it helped in a pinch.

When I'm out in the barn, I'm with the living roots and branches of my life. I don't know that I have anyone to pass them on to; my adult sons don't want horses. My grandson likes them, but doesn't have the passion that might keep him involved throughout his life. I won't sell them, no matter what. It's my job to live long enough to see them through their lives, lol.

17. I feel your angst, LWolf.
There is so much - what's the word I'm searching for ... pressure, perhaps? ... in being the 'single mother/father/provider' in a situation like this. Perhaps the roots and branches in your life are not for your blood relatives, but for your spiritual relatives, your friends. It's less of a concern when we know there are loved ones who would step in for us, in case of illness or death, and ensure the continued well-being of our family.

19. The pressure is certainly there.
For my human family, as well. I'm the only child of a single mom, with no extended family. I've been taking care of her emotionally since I was a kid myself. I raised my 2 boys alone, and their mostly absent dad passed away 7 years ago. My son is raising his son alone. Really, our ENTIRE extended family consists of my mom, me, my 2 sons and 1 grandson. I'm the keystone for all.

While I'm used to it, and have managed pretty well, I often wonder who will do the job when I can't.

As for my animals, I'll make sure I don't add any young enough to outlive me in the natural course of things.
