Since you helped to save him, want to help name him? (Baby elephant in Portland needs name.) |

The Portland zoo is currently accepting votes for five possible names for its new elephant calf (who is now reunited with his mom and doing well). http://www.oregonzoo.org/Voter/vote_form.cfmI went with Bao. I'd love to hear what people here voted for.

1. I'm happy to help choose. |

We canceled a planned trip to the Portland Zoo this summer. Finances are tight, and I simply didn't have the $$ for the gas to cross the Cascades, and even a cheap hotel room for the family for one night.
Perhaps, if we reschedule, we'll get to meet him.
Meanwhile, I was torn between two of the choices. Bao was one. I finally voted for Hugo-Tu. I like the family connection, remembering that he is not isolated, but comes from others, and I like envisioning him as a "heart tree" or "spirit tree."

also. They were all good.
Hope you do get to go see him someday. Let us know! I've never been to Oregon. And not likely to go. I did take a job 10 years ago specifically because they had a branch office in Portland, and I thought I would like to transfer. In the end, decided I would not be able to handle cold, damp weather.

5. The Oregon coast is "damp," it's true. |

Temperate rainforest. ;) You can whale watch with binoculars from the shoreline, hike in the rainforest, enjoy rivers and lakes and forests...it's an outdoor paradise for nature lovers and people who like many outdoor sports.
The rest of the state is not so wet. It's mostly high desert east of the Cascades. That's where I am. We get about 11-12 inches of rain a year.
Cold, though. Yes, it's cold. Spring through fall is great, although spring and fall can be chilly some years. Winter is...brrrrrrrrr.
Portland is a wonderful city, wet as it is. I love visiting when I can afford to.

I liked it anyway but I also like the Kevin Duckworth connection. I think he would like it. I'm so glad baby elephant is okay. Thanks for posting this.

8. Okay, that's a little freaky |

When I read BlueIris' post about naming her next significant other, the very first name that came into my head was Kevin. But I didn't go with it because I thought something more common would be more likely to win (so competitive...sigh). Then I get to this and I'm thinking "what's with all the name issues today?" and I see one of the potential elephant names is linked to Trail Blazer Kevin Duckworth. There's the Kevin!
So that's the one I voted for.
