Help for my cat? Or at least some insight?
My cat, Ceci, has lost her appetite. She was eating less and less, and now for a couple of days it's virtually nothing. She doesn't seem to be in pain, but she does seem a little weak. I'm really concerned, and the helplessness is what gets me the most. Took her to the vet, he gave me some appetite stimulant, but it doesn't seem to have done any good. I'm waiting for the blood work. I don't have the money for extreme medical intervention, and I don't know what I'll do if she's really sick.

So, asking for good thoughts for my cat, or any suggestions.

Thanks.

1. How old is she?
Have you posted in the "Pet" group? Did your vet ask you to call back or wait for the tests?

3. She's about 7 or 8, I got her from a shelter.
I'll post in the Pet group in about an hour or so, when I get home.

Time to get practical. I'm at the end of my work day, and I have to water my garden before I get home. I'm also waiting for the vet to call me back.

2. Try giving her some strained baby food like chicken or turkey. Also, she might enjoy a little
cream. I get the heavy cream from Trader Joe's. My Benny loves it and it doesn't give him diarrhea. Even if it gives them diarrhea, that is a small problem when she needs some nutrients. One of my kitties suffered from kidney failure and she actually lived and thrived on the cream for a while until I had to put her down.

5. Is she drinking water?
Cream sounds like a good idea, not only for nutrients but to keep her from getting dehydrated...

8. Yes is she or was she drinking as much water as usual? Did you ever notice her staring at the water
bowl for a while before drinking or staring for a while then just walking away? Have you noticed her laying differently such as over the arm of an armchair with the head hanging much lower than usual almost in the pose of a human who is going to upchuck out a car window? These are things my cats who had chronic renal failure did before they started acting sick and the blood work showed impaired kidney function. I hope this is just a temprorary problem with your furbaby but if it turns out to be more serious like CRF please remember cats can live enjoyable lives for years with it.

Whatever the cause the most important thing is to get your cat eating again. My cats go nuts for jars of baby food chicken or turkey. They will even not fight so hard to avoid pills if I have an open jar waiting to bribe them. My crf kitties would eat that even when they refused every other cat or human food.

9. Thanks for the support.
Still no final word, but she's taking some cream, and drinking. The vet says it might be CRF in some way or other.

10. Hope your little kitty improves. Ditto the advice about strained
meat baby food and cream, as well as x-posting in the pets forum. My cat, Tiny, was diagnosed with CRF in 2004 (age 12 yrs.) and lived 4 full years after that diagnosis. He was quite healthy up until the last few weeks. The vet put him on a prescription diet, but he didn't like it, so I started feeding him a high quality (Prairie Naturals freeze-dried turkey medallions) food that he loved.and he was a very happy cat. I hope you can work out something for your dear Ceci. I am sending healing energies in your direction. Keep us posted.

14. If it turns out to be CRF and your kitty still isn't eating or eating enough ask about Famotidine
Edited on Thu Jul-02-09 03:08 PM by Shallah Kali
It is the generic for one of those acid reducing pills. My vet has one of my cats on 1/2 of a 10mg tablet of famotidine to help her eat and it really works. kidney troubles makes one very nauseous and even made my crf kitty who has since crossed over who would get vomiting spells want to eat and some how stopped the vomiting. I am not always a good kitty Momma and have forgotten to give her the pill so she won't eat or eat as much. Within 30 minutes of the tablet she is yowling to be fed NOW! btw although she doesn't like it I always use a syringe (the needless kind) to give her a little water, 1ml which I think is about 1 tsp, after pilling her to make sure it goes down and does not get stuck. I read about doing that on a site on crf kitties.

15. I lost my cat, Ceci, at the vet today.
Unfortunately, none of the treatments had worked, and she was both unable to stand and in pain. I had to let her go. I feel sorry that I couldn't fix her up. I really appreciate all the help I got here, and wanted to thank everybody.

Or are you getting something more specific?

29. General suspicion, I suppose
but a lifetime of feline companionship has taught me a few things. :)

I've felt like a few of mine have 'come back' to me. They are different 'people' sometimes, but their energy is the same. It's hard to describe, but I feel a kinship to them and an understanding.

And they arrive at the oddest times. Visiting a friend and having her invite one over to a neighbor's place because they just had kittens. My Max was a 4 1/2 week-old baby that was left in a box outside of Grocery Outlet the day I happened to visit. The best animals I've ever had were kismet. I never went looking for them. And I can't help but wonder if a couple of them have found their way back over the course of 40+ years.

I have lost a couple of wonderful cats to renal failure. It's a really hard thing to deal with, I know I spent a lot of time second-guessing myself about what I could have done.

Blessings and strength, J
