Hodges hands over command of Lejeune

After two years as the first woman and first colonel to command Camp Lejeune, N.C., Col. Adele Hodges handed over command Monday to Col. Richard Flatau, officials said.

Flatau assumed command during a 3 p.m. ceremony at the Goettge Memorial Field House. He last served as assistant chief of staff of the Aviation Logistics Division while at U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command in Norfolk, Va.

Hodges enlisted in the Marine Corps in June 1978. She was accepted into the Enlisted Commissioning Program in December 1979 and was commissioned the following year. She has completed assignments in Hawaii, Louisiana, California, Rhode Island, Virginia, Kenya and NATO’s joint headquarters in Stavanger, Norway. She also deployed with Headquarters Battalion, 2nd Marines, as a battalion supply officer during Operation Desert Storm.

Hodges took over as base commander Jan. 23, 2006, overseeing more than 47,000 Marines and sailors. During her term at Lejeune, Hodges oversaw the development of new training, improvements to infrastructure and stepped-up security at Brown’s Island, a nearby atoll where unexploded ordnance is buried. She will join the Inspector General’s Office at Marine Corps headquarters in Arlington, Va.

Flatau joined the Marine Corps Reserve in 1984, and has had assignments in Japan, Somalia, California, South Carolina and Virginia. He was promoted to colonel in May 2005.
