Witness now tells Army he had no knowledge of setup
By Charlie Coon, Stars and Stripes
European edition, Thursday, February 7, 2008

A witness who was expected to testify that Staff Sgt. Stephen Burley was falsely convicted of ordering a “code red” has now told Army investigators he has no knowledge of a cover-up.

The witness, Pvt. Brandon Jonjock, was thought to have signed a sworn statement in September claiming that three soldiers told him they beat up a fourth soldier and then falsely testified that Burley had ordered the beating.

Jonjock and the three soldiers were inmates who lived together at the Mannheim Detention Facility in Germany.

“They (the three soldiers) said, ‘We got out of it,’ ” Jonjock told Stars and Stripes in a telephone interview Friday. “I asked them how they got out of it and they said, ‘We said our (noncommissioned officer) did it.’ That he gave them the order to do it.”

But in a new statement taken Monday by Army investigators in Vicenza, Italy, Jonjock claims that the three soldiers never told him they framed Burley.
