MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. — Lt. Col. Paul Ryan has taken command of the Marine Corps’ first Osprey squadron to deploy to Iraq.

Ryan took command during a ceremony Thursday at Marine Corps Air Station New River.

Ryan replaces Lt. Col. Paul J Rock, who led the squadron, VMM-263, on a seven-month deployment to Iraq.

Many leathernecks with the MV-22 Osprey squadron returned to Marine Corps Air Station New River, N.C., shortly before midnight Saturday, Gunnery Sgt. Brenda Varnadore, an air station spokeswoman, said in an e-mail Wednesday.

The squadron’s 12 aircraft remain at Al Asad air base, where they are now being operated by VMM-162, another New River-based squadron that deployed late last month.
