MINNEAPOLIS — The Army’s top commander says he’s feeling good about a modernization program after seeing a new cannon prototype in Minnesota.
Gen. George Casey, joined by
Republican Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma, toured BAE Systems on Friday to see the new non-line-of-sight cannon.
The two-man vehicle is still several years away from being used in combat, but Casey says its precision and versatility could help U.S. troops in Iraq and future conflicts.
The cannon is part of an Army modernization plan called “Future Combat Systems.” Some have criticized the program for delays and escalating costs.
But on Friday, Inhofe and Casey said they’re hopeful skeptics will support the effort now that they have an example.
