Group opposes Army war simulators at air show

CLEVELAND — The Army and the Cleveland Air Show are under fire over a virtual reality war game planned as an attraction at the Labor Day weekend show.

It’s called the “Virtual Army Experience.” In Humvee replicas that feel as though they’re speeding through the desert, players 13 and over shoot fake machine guns at images of people projected outside the windows.

The group Veterans for Peace says the simulators desensitize children to killing. The group is trying to rally the public so the game will be kept away.

The Army defends the Virtual Army Experience as “a messaging tool.” Bowing to pressure, it pulled the game from a festival in Milwaukee last month.

The Cleveland Air Show says the simulators came last year and there was no controversy.
