More than 1,000 Marines and sailors with 2nd Battalion, 24th Marines, are set to return to Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center at Twentynine Palms, Calif., following a seven-month deployment to Iraq.

The reservists are expected to begin arriving Friday before returning home to the Chicago area, a Marine spokesman said in a statement. About 240 are expected Friday, with 770 more returning in three waves Saturday.

The battalion turned over control of an area near Camp Habbaniyah, Iraq, on Aug. 10 to 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines, according to a Marine statement. Their duties included helping to build civic order and develop the Iraqi security forces.
