RIVERSIDE, Calif. — A jury has been impaneled in the federal trial of a former Marine accused of killing unarmed detainees in Fallujah in November 2004.
Federal prosecutors and defense attorneys selected jurors Tuesday in a case that marks the first time a federal law has been used to prosecute a former Marine, sailor or soldier for actions during combat.
Jose Luis Nazario Jr. is charged with one count of voluntary manslaughter on suspicion of killing or causing others to kill four unarmed detainees on Nov. 9, 2004, during some of the fiercest fighting in the Iraq war.
Nazario has pleaded not guilty. He could face more than 10 years in prison if convicted of all charges.
Opening statements are scheduled for Thursday.
