OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A vehicle collision last week took the life of a Marine assigned to the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

Gunnery Sgt. Manuelito J. Patton was killed Oct. 17 when his motorcycle struck a vehicle that ran through a red light at a Phoenix, Ariz., intersection, according to the 13th MEU and the Naval Safety Center, which posted an item on its Web site.

Patton, who enlisted in 1993, was a UH-1/AH-1 helicopter mechanic and was assigned to the Camp Pendleton-based 13th MEU, according to Staff Sgt. Matthew Holly, a MEU spokesman. His overseas tours included combat deployments to Iraq.

Patton’s military decorations include: four awards each of the Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal and Good Conduct Medal; Sea Service Deployment Ribbons with four stars; Iraq Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal with gold star; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Navy Unit Commendation; Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation with gold star; Certificate of Appreciation; Letter of Appreciation; and Meritorious Mast.
