Solider rings bell for a different Army

LERAY, N.Y. -- Before heading off to combat, one 10th Mountain Division soldier is giving back to charity. Staff Sergeant James Slye said before he headed to Afghanistan, he wanted to complete one final mission here at home, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army's Red Kettle campaign.

"A few weeks ago I was walking through the mall and I seen a young lady there who was pretty much retired military and she motivated me. I said you know what I want to ring the bell," said Slye.

"It's not what you make in life or what you have in life, just what you do in life. How you make people smile, you know, that's it," Slye said.

All money raised through Slye's efforts will stay locally to help those in need this holiday season.
