ALBANY, N.Y. — More than 150 members of the New York Army National Guard have arrived home from Afghanistan in time to celebrate New Year’s Eve in the United States.

The soldiers of the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team arrived at a military air base in North Carolina last night and then moved to nearby Fort Bragg, where they’ll spend the next five days out-processing from active duty.

Another 250 soldiers from the same unit are due to return to New York on Wednesday, when they’ll arrive at armories in Rochester, Syracuse, Newburgh and suburban Albany.

Nearly half of the unit’s 1,700 soldiers who deployed to Afghanistan 10 months ago have returned to the U.S.

The New York soldiers were part of a larger unit that trained the Afghan national army and police force.
