The punishment for using a hand-held cell phone while driving on an Air Force base is getting tougher at some installations.

Starting Jan. 1, drivers at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., and the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., will lose base driving privileges for one week if they are ticketed for driving and using a hand-held cell phone at the same time.

The weeklong driving ban will be enforced on top of existing traffic fines and points assessed against an offending driver’s license.

The new policy applies to airmen, civilian workers and their families and guests.

An Air Force spokesman said base commanders could decide to implement the tougher sanction since it is among the approved punishments for the driving violation.
