CAMDEN, N.C. — North Carolina Sen. Kay Hagan is visiting northeastern North Carolina to discuss the Navy’s search for a landing field.

Hagan will speak Friday with residents and community leaders from Camden, Curritick and Gates counties.

The Democratic lawmaker has opposed the construction of a landing field in the region. The Navy abandoned plans to build the strip in Washington County but is now considering three sites in Virginia and two sites in North Carolina — one in Gates County and the other straddling Camden and Curritick Counties.

The proposed $200 million landing field would primarily serve as a practice area for fighter pilots based at Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach.
