19,000 gallons of wastewater leaked at Lejeune

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — About 19,000 gallons of untreated wastewater has accidentally been released from a water system at the Marine base, and some has entered a nearby creek.

Officials at Camp Lejeune said Tuesday that a contractor inadvertently hit an air release valve on a 24-inch wastewater line Monday afternoon. The station powering the spill was shut off about 20 minutes later.

About 5,000 gallons of the wastewater entered Cogdell’s Creek, located 100 yards away. Officials say personnel have cleaned up the spill area. Tests on the creek and nearby New River are ongoing, and results will be released at an unspecified date.
