My niece just joined the Army |
|
She's at Ft. Jackson for basic and will attend AIT at Ft. Gordon. I've been asking around and I hear a lot of negative stuff about Ft. Gordon. Anyone know about Ft. Gordon?

1. Just curious, with the current administration in charge, why did she sign up? |
|
If is too personal of a question, just ignore it, I am just curious what young people are thinking?

I'm an Army vet, and I tried to at least get her to visit the Air Force and Navy recruiters. I don't think these kids pay attention to what's happening in Iraq. The recruiter told her that she would never see combat. I shot that lie down right away. I don't live near her, or I would have paid that recruiter a visit. Then, I tried to steer her in the right direction as far as her MOS. She chose communications. So, I've researched Ft. Gordon, and I've found nothing good about that place. I found that when these kids show up for AIT, they often have to wait for a slot to open up. They can wait for weeks and months in many cases. I have found that leadership seems to be lacking in the training units at Ft. Gordon.

I wish your niece the best and will continue to work to bring the troops home so that she and others will not have to fight on foreign soil. Peace, Kim

I don't know what "negative stuff" you can hear about it. Didn't have any problems during my time there *shrug*.

The place use to have a drug problem, but they were alreay cracking down when I arrived. It's where Signal folks train and was really laid back compared to most of your other bases under TRADOC (hence Ft. Resort).
I visited there a couple other times over the years and really didn't see anything that different from my time. Then again I haven't been back that away since '99.
EDIT: Was as close to a college campus as one could get. Once we passed our first couple PT tests we were allowed off base on weekends and enjoyed more freedoms than the "noobies" (folks who just finished basic). There was a bit of hazzing (I think they did away with that). But otherwise you learned your what not during the day for your MOS, left post after some PT and hung out at the mall or where-ever in Augusta. Weekends we would all divy up and split a motel room and just hang around off base till Sunday night when we had to report back for formation.
