Army to notify spouses cut from insurance
Army to notify spouses cut from insurance

Married soldiers who want to change their Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance beneficiaries to someone other than their spouse or children may want to think twice about that decision.

Responding to a recent change in law, the Army has implemented procedures that require personnel officials to notify spouses when they have been written out of a soldier’s GI insurance policy.

The Army also will notify spouses if a soldier purchases less than the maximum coverage of $400,000 in government insurance.

Under the new procedures, the service’s Electronic Military Personnel Office, or eMilPO, has been programmed not to print a new SGLI Form 8286 (insurance election and certification) until after a spouse notification letter is printed when the spouse or the children are written out of the policy.

The notification letter will be sent to the spouse’s last known address. In cases where there is no current address in eMilPO, the system will instruct the operator to enter an address using the family member function of the software.

The changes reflect Army efforts to comply with federal law (Title 38 U.S. Code, Section 1967), and a provision of the 2005 National Defense Authorization Act.
