BALTIMORE — Baltimore prosecutors have dropped attempted murder charges against a city man who was arrested in a shooting that wounded five people.

Eighteen-year-old Jerrell Hill was arrested at Fort Sill, Okla., where he is a soldier. He was expected to be freed from custody Thursday night.

Prosecutors say they lacked sufficient evidence for the charges against Hill. Police, however, say he remains a person of interest in the case.

The shooting happened Sept. 20 near the 2400 block of Barclay Street. Police say at least three of those wounded have ties to a neighborhood gang.

Hill’s parents say their son was not responsible because he returned to Fort Sill nine days before the shooting. Police, however, say he did not return to the base until one day after the shooting.
