Privatized houses cut way back at 4 basesBy Erik Holmes - Staff writer

Air Force officials are trying to breathe life into stalled housing projects at four bases by selling the projects to a new private developer and drastically scaling back the number of housing units to be built.
The privatized projects, being developed by American Eagle Communities and a related company, called for construction of nearly 3,000 units of new or renovated housing. But after American Eagle ran into financial problems, work stopped at three of the Air Force bases — Little Rock, Ark.; Patrick, Fla.; and Moody, Ga. — and fell two years behind at a fourth — Hanscom, Mass.
Now, the Air Force and American Eagle have decided to part ways and are looking for new bidders on a four-base project that has shrunk from nearly 3,000 to 1,767 homes.
“We think right now the best way, the fastest way, to get these projects moving again is through a sale to another developer who has a more proven track record in military family housing projects,” said Brig. Gen. Rowayne Schatz, the commander at Little Rock.
Schatz said three developers visited the four bases in late October, and all three developers seemed interested in bidding on the project.
He said he hopes a sale can be completed by the end of the year so construction could be restarted early next summer. But he called that timeline “optimistic.”
