Group Vows to Disrupt More Funerals
Group Vows to Disrupt More Funerals
Agence France-Presse | November 02, 2007

Armed with signs shouting "thank God for dead soldiers," a radical anti-gay US church plans to resume its controversial funeral protests Friday despite being ordered to pay $11 million to the family of a fallen Soldier offended by their hateful songs and slogans.

Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church hailed the jury verdict as yet another opportunity to spread its message that God is punishing the United States for its tolerance of homosexuality.

"We will continue to warn you of your impending doom as long as our God gives us breath," church leaders said in a press release lined with biblical references and pictures of the signs its members flaunt at funerals.

"Not only did you fail to stop our preaching, but our message has gone to the entire world."

The fringe group of fire and brimstone Baptists from Topeka, Kansas has been courting controversy for more than 17 years.

The church first gained national notoriety when they picketed the funeral of Matthew Shepard, a Wyoming student who was murdered in 1998 for being gay.

3. while it is certainly tempting, and comforting to think about,
I sure hope we keep ourselves above their despicable behaviour. No need to stoop to their level.

2. When will these incredibly stupid people figure out that homosexuality
is also the cause of global warming, the increasing price of oil, the California fire storms and the fact that roots in the sewer system made my neightbor's toilet overflow last week. Whew what a stench but you gotta blame somebody !!!!

Sorry - Don't know how to make the sarcasm fire flasher!!!

be able to afford gas to go around and harass people at funerals.

These people are truly despicable. They showed up here in my small city a few monts ago to protest at the church where services were being held, but they did not show up at the cemetary. Local paper gave them virtually zero coverage, but the Omaha paper mentioned them. In fact, in the Omaha Wortld Herald yesterday, there was an editorial condemning them as a a violent non-Christian entity.

If I am not mistaken, Phelps' "church" is 99% family, very small, (75 members?), and he gets his "funding" by suing others.

they got cash by suing others for "suppressing" their Free Speech...:eyes:

Hmmmm.looks like Karma to me...:D

Not to say I am anti-Free Speech, I am an adament supporter of the First Amendment, but slander, libel, and "crying fire in a crowded theater", are not within the protected zone.

Man, two edits in just a couple of minutes...my spelling/typing is atrocious w/o the proper level of caffeinization.

7. Wow - a fello-Husker
born in St. Paul - just north of Grand Island. Moved away many years ago, but have remained a faithful Husker football fan . . . sure is painful this year.

I'm a transplant here, originally a NY'er.

Bad year...LOL...it is horrid. As for the jacket, I got it to keep the buzzards at bay, but now I think that if I wear it, I'll get my butt kicked...can't win...

BTW, I'm in the Northeastern corner, Norfolk to be precise.
