Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne issued his latest “Letter to Airmen” on Wednesday, exhorting the service’s leaders to set and communicate goals for their airmen.

Titled “Creating Accountable Airmen through Leadership,” the letter opened with an example of an airman who determined his base should replace its sodium arc streetlights with more energy-efficient LEDs to meet AFSO21 objectives. Such day-to-day decisions, Wynne’s letter said, are examples of how airmen can play an integral part in the “bigger picture” by working towards their leaders’ established goals.

hen leadership communicates the Air Force goals to their people, our airmen are enabled with the knowledge to perform their tasks and better support the Air Force mission,” the letter said. “These goals must flow down from the top to every Reserve, Guard and Regular Air Force airman around the world.”

Wynne cited noncommissioned officers and deployed front-line leaders as especially crucial conduits for keeping airmen “mission-oriented.”
