President George W. Bush named former Republican Party Chairman Jim Nicholson Thursday as the successor to outgoing Veterans Affairs Secretary Anthony Principi.
Nicholson is a West Point graduate who served 8 years as an Army Ranger and paratrooper. He retired as a full colonel.
He earned a masters degree in public policy from Columbia University in New York and a law degree from the University of Denver. He practiced law in Denver, then founded a development firm.
He was elected chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1997 and served through the 2000 elections. In 2001 he was named ambassador to the Vatican.
