Americans told to avoid Vicenza this weekend Stars and Stripes
European edition, Saturday, December 15, 2007
Americans are being discouraged — and in some case cases, prohibited — from visiting downtown Vicenza, Italy, this weekend.
Warnings were issued at all U.S. military facilities around the country and an advisory was posted Thursday by the U.S. Embassy.
Authorities expect thousands of people to protest the U.S. use of Dal Molin and other issues during a demonstration, according to the embassy posting. The main protest is supposed to be on Saturday, but U.S. personnel have been told to avoid the areas the entire weekend.
Some demonstrations also are expected to occur around the gates of Caserma Ederle.
Maj. Gen. Frank Helmick, commander of the Southern European Task Force (Airborne), ordered personnel based in Vicenza to avoid most of the downtown area as well as areas around the Dal Molin airfield. Aviano Air Base passed along the same message, setting areas off-limits. Those living in the affected areas have been told to stay at home or leave the area entirely.
