Where’s the bonus?

Seven weeks after the Air Force announced its bonus plans for enlisted airmen — and more than three months since fiscal 2008 began — the service has yet to say what bonuses it intends to offer pilots and other rated officers for 2008.

It’s been years since the service has waited this long into the fiscal year to unveil a bonus program for pilots. From 2003 through 2005, the service laid out the details of the aviator continuation pay program in October or November. The rollout of the 2007 bonus plan came in December 2006.

The Air Force is also behind the curve in comparison to its sister services, all of whom have presented their 2008 aviator bonus programs.

Air Force officials are tight-lipped on what is behind the delay, insisting there is no problem.

We are “currently working on a fiscal year 2008 aviator continuation pay program proposal that is being reviewed and coordinated at the Air Staff,” the service’s chief of rated force policy, Lt. Col. Kip Turain, said in a written statement to Air Force Times.
