Daegu police recommended Wednesday that a South Korean prosecutor charge six Camp Walker soldiers with assault for allegedly beating two South Korean women outside a restaurant in November.

The soldiers allegedly punched and kicked two South Korean women who tried to stop them from vandalizing a sign outside the restaurant around 12:30 a.m. on Nov. 18, according to police. All six soldiers repeatedly have denied hitting the women, police said.

The South Korean women, a 37-year-old and her mother, 59, own the restaurant.

The Daegu prosecutor will decide if the charges are serious enough for the soldiers to be tried in court, or light enough to be punished by a fine, police said Wednesday. Police had completed their investigation in December, but were unable to forward it until Wednesday.

During police questioning, the U.S. soldiers said they were attacked by South Korean onlookers outside the restaurant. They denied striking the women and said they weren’t going to offer them financial compensation, police said.
