1. We can discuss lots of topics
The trouble is using our little haven here to launch swarms on other threads. Admittedly this does seem problematic in a political forum. But the chaos that grows out of such camp formations would inevitably lead to our own groups demise or DU.

2. If we're in a camp formation, it is due to being stuck in a foxhole...
There was one particularly egregious incident over the summer in which someone ACTUALLY said that the idiot who ran over the crosses at Camp Casey must have been an atheist, because that was simply not a Xian act.

Was the comment deleted? No. Was the thread locked? No. Did we ever get an explanation? Sort of. Skinner came into a thread on the topic here and told us that we knew what the OP meant, and we should simply let it go.

We have been accused of being a pack of atheists. Well you know what? Maybe it's about time. In the wild, canines form packs for warmth and support and protection. So if we are a pack, then I for one am glad. It is high time that we, as skeptics, start looking out for each other. With the party and our fellow "progressives" looking to ditch us at every turn, someone's got to look out for us.

3. I agree.
How else are minorities heard?

By playing nicely with the bigots ?

By fighting fair ?

Right.

I'll just wait here for the rest of DU to decide when and how I can speak.

4. Never said don't stand together
Just saying that the rules as they are right now dictate that we cannot launch attacks from the subforums. And there is a real reason for that.

We have to rely on each other. There is no question about that. But lets be smart about it too. Use the tools we have. And use them how we can.

5. I'd prefer the term "pride of atheists" over "pack of atheists"
You know, like lions instead of wolves.

7. Well, we can always discuss the weather
It rained here in Los Angeles today.

I blame it on the atheists.

9. I wasn't kidding when I said, "We've been described as a pack"
Certainly not a description I would have chosen, but I rather like it. Canines pack together for safety and support. But the term "pride" works, too. Just don't expect to lounge around in the shade while the females do the hunting!

11. Don't laugh, I sometimes think of the religion wars as West Side Story
We, of course, are the Sharks (if for no other reason than I'm Latina and it's my head). Sometimes when I get a good tear on, I think of a particular scene in which the gangs are getting ready to rumble.

The godless gonna have their way
TONIGHT!
The theists start to grumble,
Fair fight!
But if they start to rumble
We're gonna rumble right!

Also, I sometimes think of the song "America"

I like to post in R & T
Everything's free in R & T
Atheists can be in R & T
With major restrictions in R & T

13. Remember that song "Nobody Likes Me?"
My mom used to sing it to us when we were kids.

"Nobody likes me
Everybody hates me
I'm gonna eat some worms!
Long slim slimy ones
Short fat greasy ones
Itsy-bitsy fuzzy wuzzy worms,"

I always hear that song when I read yet another "You don't believe what I do so you're persecuting me" thread.

Although the Minnesota version said "Might as well go eat worms" for the third line. :)

16. I like "Hive Mind"
Edited on Wed Sep-21-05 10:57 AM by onager
Bzzzzzzzzzz!

I always loved that one. Xers used to hurl it at us, on the old IRC #atheism channel. It was meant as an insult, implying that we were zombies who always agreed with each other. That's funny , since we had often been fighting among ourselves before they showed up.

What always happened--of course--was that they barged into an atheist group proselytizing, or attacking evolution, or doing their usual silly crap.

And they got stung.

Bzzzzzzzz!

Are you talking about DALNET #atheism? How long ago were you active there? My nick was still Az_ (had to attach the tail to adhere to the naming scheme).

21. Oh, a LONG time ago!
And I used to veer between DALNET and a couple of others. We probably ran into each other and I don't remember it.

I also hung around on alt.atheism too, where one of the Chief Atheists had a very unfortunate name--Michelle Malkin. The atheist MM kept the Official Atheist Log and assigned each of us a number. That was in response to some Xian idiot claiming that only "one or two atheists" were posting the hundreds of messages into the group.

The web used to have some great atheist chat rooms too, and I can't find any of them now.

22. 1176
That was my number and I remember MM well. I used to post on alt.atheism as well. Did battle with the legends(boatright et al).

We even had George Smith chatting in the DALNET group for a while. He wrote Atheism: The Case Against God. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/087975124X/qid=1127323059/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-1771639-8551165?v=glance&s=books&n=507846
