1. This stunster seems to be a major atheiaphobe
He is a recent arrival and pretty much most of his posts are centered around attacking atheism and his twisted sense of materialism.

2. not just attacking atheism
but attacking atheists, as well. Individually.

Of course, he often fails to respond when it's inconvenient for him. I know he's suddenly dropped a discussion with me to move on to another part of the thread before.

3. It's kinda pointless arguing with him
I was watching the one thread in the religion group that was supposed to just be for believers (I was staying out, mostly, to respect their wishes). He dropped a group of quotes attacking atheists and materialists as usual. No one responded to it for a long time other than to point out some of it was copyrighted and he couldn't post it here.

I have taken to simply posting a picture of a strawman after his posts.

I don't think he is reaching many others than those that have a natural disposition to egg on skeptics. And they merely get a kick out of the idea of attacking skeptics.

18. Yes, I have put him on ignore due to personal attacks.
I caught him early on comparing atheists to women who have never had an orgasm. Never mind the sexism of the statement, the illogic of it is glaring. At any rate, after some more exchanges with him, he became increasingly hostile and angry, culminating in a really nasty post that got deleted.

33. Man, I never do that.
Can't hit "Alert" on ignored posts, you know.

I like to give them rope, like for instance asking, "Is that why you called XXX (another poster) a hypocrite?" If the answer is yes, BAM!

There are many other approachs, but basically I try to remain civil, but in a way that invites them to go over the edge. Has worked wonders.

11. What a crock!
How dare he speak for me. How dare he accuse atheists of equating a tsunami to rape. I am an atheist because I'm convinced God doesn't exist. We come into this world not believing in God. That is the natural state. It is up to the theists to convince me God exists. So far all they've done is make me more certain I'm right and they're wrong.

12. I have encountered a number of debaters like him
Though debate is not quite the word for it. They specialize in cognitive disonance propped up by numerous and ponderous strawmen arguments. The trick they run is to bombard with so many flawed arguments that the opponent goes nuts chasing after them all. Then when you corner one he throws a ton in the other direction.

Its a game to them. Like Ann Coulter. They aren't really interested in the argument. They are looking to create humiliation and aggrevation. They simply say things to get a rise.

19. Interesting...
direct links to posts work, even if you have the poster on ignore. So unfortunately I had to read his latest drivel. Yoinks! It's an atheistic argument that because free will is bad, theism is false? WTF?
Free will raises huge problems for theism, especially certain kinds of theism (Christianity, for instance) but it does not in itself dispel theism.

The master of the strawman.

is he seems to have a very heavy background in exposure to the philosophies. Yet there is a complete lack of understanding other than what supports his own personal issues. Simultaneous knowledge and ignorance. It really is a pity.

13. Not the only one
There seem to be a few here that take joy in playing the victim card EVERY time religion is discussed. Then, there are those like the one you mention, who attack without any thought. He is not really all that interesting, when it comes right down to it. I have seen it on the opposite side too. I may be a theist, but I really enjoy coming into this room because it is one of the few places you can discuss religion and there is a semblance of rationality.

When you encounter him again..follow the sage advice of the police..."Move along, nothing to see!" :)

2. Those grooved spheres

Edited on Fri Jan-07-05 08:02 PM by indigobusiness
when set on a flat surface and left alone, will slowly start to spin.

They have some in a museum in Johannesburg, that are in a glass case and just slowly turn continuously.

I'm sure you won't be alerting on this, since you don't care what I believe, right?

25. I've Seen That Poster Do The Same Thing Over And Over Again
Make some ridiculous claim of a supposed "fact", like the spinning spheres, or a man who survived without a brain, and then say "It's an established fact! Go look it up!" and then ultimately it would be nothing of the sort.

That particular poster and I had a protracted discussion once because he/she was convinced that art criticism was somehow objective and took issue w/ me because I claimed that all art (and opinions about it) was subjective. He/she even had the gall to put an art critics education in the same category as a physicians. :eyes: Loopy...

Yeah, I remember that brain discussion. Oy. I confronted him with expert testimony to the contrary, and it mattered not one bit.

Art criticism is objective? Is that even a defensible position?

27. You Would Think That It's Not Defensible
But he did try by claiming since art critics were educated in techniques, like surgeons (I swear he said this, or something very much like it), they were professionals and their opinions and criticisms about art were therefore objective. Loopy.

It was a discussion about what exactly IS art. I said it's all subjective. He said what IS art is NOT objective, that the critics know. I'll see if I can find the thread, it was in the lounge. It ended by him finally admitting that critics TRY to be objective. Obviously a much different thing.

36. As usual he gets it wrong by twisting
Art critics can objectively examine style and technique. But these are just the tools to create art. Art communicates ideas and emotions. A picture of a banana is just a picture of a banana. It can be well painted and objectively critiqued. The painting Oiran by Van Gogh not only experiments in style but it conveys a sense of culture. You could objectively critique the style of the painting and miss the beauty of it entirely.

35. Reminds me of my old middle school science teacher
I have ADHD. I have never been a good student but always found myself in the advanced classes. One science teacher was completely hooked on process. His methology was death to anyone with something like ADHD. He tried to fail me. Years later when I took the SAT I got one of the highest scores in the science section in the state. It was gratifying showing him that process is not the only way to learn.
