If you accept any of these by mistake, just send them to me, and I'll dispose of them.

What on earth will these bozos find to feel persecuted about if they get the theocracy they want? :eyes:

4. Snopes says it's false
I got one of those emails a few months ago, so I checked Snopes, and surprise, surprise, it's false. Just another load of crap to keep the fundies in an uproar.

9. There were a small number which were accidentally minted without the edge inscription
I remember it being (reliably) reported at the time. Perhaps that's the source of this hoax? The funny thing is that those incorrectly milled coins are presumably collectors' items (assuming they actually went into circulation), and would be worth a lot more than a dollar each, so any of these poor, persecuted Christians who refused to accept one would be losing out. Would they change their mind if they realised that?

How do write an e-mail that includes incidents of people having read that same e-mail?

7. I assumed that the self-reference was a comment added
as the culprit forwarded the original e-mail explaining how the Treasury Department is persecuting Christians. Just my damned rational brain trying to find a logical explanation again.

Have you ever seen "good luck" chain letters that describe the tragedies that befell people who broke the chain?

8. "In God We Trust" is engraved on the edge of each coin

Unless there is some other new dollar coin that I'm not aware of, it looks like these fanatics are irate for absolutely no reason.

U.S. $1 coins 'Godless' after mint error

'In God we trust' omitted: 'Have militant atheists infiltrated the U.S. Mint?'
Mary Vallis , National Post
Published: Monday, March 12, 2007

Americans may trust in God, but they may no longer trust the U.S. Mint.

An unknown number of new dollar coins commemorating George Washington's presidency have been released without the phrase "In God We Trust" lettered on their edges.

The "Godless" coins are already a hot collectors item, selling for more than US$200 each on eBay.

The Mint has struck 300 million of the coins but cannot say how many were released without the crucial inscription, which first appeared on two-cent coins in 1861. The agency says they were "inadvertently" placed into circulation on Feb. 15.

But some are suggesting the error may be part of a larger conspiracy to remove God from America's public life.

"Have the ACLU and the militant atheists infiltrated the U.S. Mint?" writes conservative columnist and blogger Tony Phyrillas.

15. "Crucial inscription"?
Could anything be more meaningless? The ACLU has much bigger problems than a stupid religious reference on our money.

Look! Over there! It's habeas corpus!

17. Oh man, I'm so jaded.
I can't even remember what it is that happened to habeas corpus. I recall it was taken away some time ago but I don't even remember anymore. It's all just one unending nightmare. How many days are left before it's over?

I remember being shocked that the Supreme Court gave Bush the Presidency, and thinking that things were going to be bad, but I had no fucking idea. I can't keep up with this shit any more. It's all too much. Last week I saw a thing on DU and was like, "Who's Don Siegalman?" I had completely forgotten about the prosecutor purge and the political prosecutions. I can't keep up with this shit.

I read a couple of weeks ago about a man who has not shaved since the day Bush took office. I remember my first thought was, "Oh, man, you knew then, didn't you?" I bet everyone who mocked him way back then feels pretty fucking stupid right now.

20. Oh, it's just this quaint old legal principle
guaranteeing an accused person the right to hear charges against him/her in court. It was established back in 1215, but it went out of style.
