Non-official "Refuge from the media" thread
In this time of non-stop religion in the news, i feel that we need a thread where we can "get away from it all". We may not be suffering from grief, but if you're a news junkie and an athiest like myself, you're certainly suffering from a "religion overload".

This is not an anti-pope thread, it's an anti-media thread. How are you coping with the media feeding frenzy? (i know i know i know...i should just turn it off) :)

Discuss, rant, or hijack at will...

3. Make sure you keep some pepto-bismol nearby.....

2. I'm sitting here in a haze of self righteousness
and invincibility since I turned the news off on 11/2/04 and prefer watching Simpson's reruns instead. It's the April Fools show on now where Homer blows himself up with a can of shaken beer.

I seriously doubt I could stomach the anticipatory outpouring of grief for a guy who aint dead yet, fed by blow dried bobbleheads hogging camera time by speculating on the meaning of every pigeon on every statue in Rome.

Let the announcement come when it comes. I'll express sympathy when it does.

4. I watch other stuff whenever possible....
However, i'm also unable to stomach "reality shows" so the amount of things i can watch is pretty limited.

Pretty much, my tv time the last few weeks (since the age of shiavo) has been occupied with Seinfeld, simpsons, and friends re-runs.

I've gotten better at timing the radio in the car, to be just in time to catch "traffic on the 8's" without having to listen to too much of the "deathwatch". It's sad how much "other" news i've been missing because of it though. :(

7. Ooooh, if you've got a connection that can handle it
then make a visit to http://www.atomfilms.com/af/home/index.html It's a collection of short films, some animated and some live. It's one of my favorite sites.

For those times you want to veg out to TV, try http://tv4all.com/ My favorite at the moment is CCTV9, the Chinese English language television station streamed on the web. It's a little like CNN used to be when Turner was in control, very slick, with a lot of short programs on Chinese history, art, and folk crafts. It's always got something worth watching. One day they even had a long bit on "Spamalot," a Monty Python based Broadway musical I hadn't even heard of here in the US!!

Those two sites alone provide a lot of material for Jonesing former TV viewers. I fully understand what you mean. Between right wing propaganda and whining yuppies on cruelty based "reality" shows, I haven't found much worth watching for a very long time, either.

both animated and live. They range from the sublime to the juvenile.

9. I've been riding my bike.
It's a new all-consuming hobby for me and it keeps me away from the news and even DU, though I can't stay away from DU very long! ;)

10. That's a hobby i need to get back into...
I used to ride bike all the time back in Wisconsin, back when i lived out in the country.....

After i moved out East, and to the city, i never wound up getting another bike. I guess being amongst the cars is a bit scary for me... :) .... (Altho, with the warmer weather starting here, it's a great time to start on it...the scenery sure beats working out in my apt. complex's "gym")

13. I'm a newbie but so far, it's really fun!

I need to be in better shape and lose weight. They say the best exercise is something you enjoy so I'm hoping I keep enjoying this. The real test will be this summer when the Texas heat begins to bear down! I ride at the Austin Veloway, which is a 3.1-mile bike road just for cyclists and roller-bladers. It's way cool and only ten minutes from where I work. :D

14. I'm hoping I'll be up to riding in the Texas heat!
I lived in Battle Creek the first ten years of my life, by the way, though I was born in Indiana. Michigan is a beautiful state! :D

15. Tonight I think I'll watch...
Edited on Fri Apr-01-05 10:26 PM by onager
Eurotrip again.

And maybe an old "Saturday Night Live" rerun. I think Sinead O'Connor was on it...

edit for Longhorn:

I went to a wedding in Hastings, MI once. It was right down the road from Battle Creek. It was beautiful. But this was Labor Day weekend and it was already getting pretty cold!

18. I'm actually going to do office work for a few days to clear my head
My wife had CNN on today. I avoid TV news like the plague but caught a few minutes during the day.

It seems like they actually broke a few times from the pope-a-thon. But only to update us on the riveting Michael Jackson saga.

19. I never watch TV during the day...
but my sister had it on at her house. We watched out of curiosity for a little while and then it just got boring. I did wonder why they were saying the rosary for him. If anyone's got any pull with God, you'd think it would be the pope.

20. I wonder if they are going to have cameras parked in the vatican
for the whole 9 day period of mourning 24/7. If so, I will have to rely on other news sources online to get other news. I will adapt.
