Blair vows to 'listen' after Iraq undermines election win

British Prime Minister Tony Blair said he had "listened and learned" after a public battering over the Iraq war undermined a historic third consecutive general election victory for his ruling Labour Party.

Blair, speaking after Queen Elizabeth II asked him to form a new government in which he is likely to retain key ministers, said he now had a clear idea what people wanted for the economy, health, education and welfare.

He also acknowledged that his government's decision to join the US-led invasion in March 2003 had been a "deeply divisive" issue for Britain, which was blamed for helping to reduce Labour's majority in parliament.

"But I also know and believe that after this election, people want to move on. They want to focus on the future, in Iraq and here," Blair said outside 10 Downing Street, his office and residence in London.
