For Your Amusement - Orson Scott Card
I saw this in the Science Fiction Group and thought some of you here would get a laugh out of this.

"It’s one thing to put your faith in a religion founded by a real person who claimed divine revelation, but it’s something else entirely to have, as the scripture of your religion, a storyline that you know was made up by a very nonprophetic human being. "

2. Note
that the author carefully avoids to acknowledge the obvious reference of the dark/bright side of the force to eastern philosophies/religions. Because he knows, of course, that if he would, he would find himself in the untenable position of claiming the superiority of his own belief sub-system. Which his apparently open, inclusive, position precludes.

4. Was not scientology written by a science fiction author?
I vaguely recall that from a raving atheist coworker of mine.

5. L. Ron Hubbard.
Edited on Wed Jun-01-05 10:01 AM by beam me up scottie
"As the founder of the Scientology religion L. Ron Hubbard has described his philosophy in more than 5,000 writings, including dozens of books, and in 3,000 tape-recorded lectures of Dianetics and Scientology. Those who regularly employ his teachings to improve themselves and help their fellows come from all walks of life, while Scientology missions and churches have been established on six continents".

edited to add that his science fiction sucked as bad as his cult.

6. I read alot of Card when I was younger
his stuff is infused with Mormon theology. In fact, his entire "Harmony" series is basically a science fiction retelling of Mormon history.

7. my son (an atheist) really likes his books
He has to give a report on one of them this Thursday. I knew Card was a right wing jerk, I just didn't know how much.
